Migraine relief without medication?
I have a migraine right now, since last night, and woke me several times during the night. The only medication I can take is tylenol (which I've been taking every 6 hrs with minor relief) because I'm having surgery in a few days. Obviously since I have one right at this moment I can't take prescription anything, I can't send away for anything on a website, etc. I'm about to go have a cup of coffee to dilate my blood vessels... Any other suggestions?

Clench your fists and concentrate on making your palms sweat. Research has shown that during a migraine attack, the temperature of your palms drops. If you can cause the temperature of your hands to rise it will relieve the pain. It's worked for me at the onset of an attack but I can't say if it will help in your case.

Cut a lime in half and rubit on your temples.
It works.

try this - put your hands in water as hot as you can stand while putting a wet towel or a cold pack on your head - temples, back of the neck, and jugular area - a pain to do, but worth it if it works. If that doesn't help or makes it worse, do the opposite - heat on the head and cold on the hands. The whole idea of this is to either draw blood to or from your head. It has worked for me before. If all else fails, call your doctor and explain the situation - they might have something they can prescribe that won't interfere with the surgery.

Light an aromatherapy candle (Lavender).
Put a heating pad/ice pack on your neck.

I will pray for you, sister.

Coffee may or may not aggravate your headaches. You are likely allergic to something & it's causing migraines.

Temporarily, you can try pressing in on both your temples = ouch! Hold 7 seconds if you can, release; repeat. Also try pinching your ear just above the lobe (one finger inside the 'notch' & one outside).

Try a warm compress across your eyes. Or on the back of your neck.

If heat doesn't work, then try a cold compress or an ice pack. And drink lots of water. You may just be dehydrated.

Or try a saline nasal spray. It's non-chemical, so you can use it as much as you want. I'm not sure of why this works, it sometimes just does.

Or take a steamy shower.

I don't really recommend the coffee before surgery.

OK, first thing - caffeine may dilate the blood vessels but caffeine in general can be a trigger for headaches and migraines. I usually find that pure water helps relax headaches more.

Cold compresses on the forehead and the neck can be helpful.

Some people find that essential oils of lavendar or peppermint help with headaches. Unfortunately, sometimes strong scents can be a headache trigger as well. Maybe put a few drops in a hot bath and relax for a little bit.

Otherwise, the key is to relax. I'm sure that's not easy for a night shift nurse getting ready for surgery in a few days but high stress is probably part of the trigger.

Several of my massage clients find massage helpful to reduce the frequency of headaches.

I SUGGEST NOT TO DRINK ANY COFFEE... COFFEE WAKES U UP...AND I CAN MAKE A HEADACE EVEN WORSE...BUT ONE THING I DO TO GET RID OF MIGRANES IS TO TAKE A NAP...DONT STRESS...AND RELAX...READ A INTERESTING BOOK...OR JUST WATCH A GOOD MOVIE...JUST RELAX....BUT THE THING THAT WORKS THE BEST IS A NAP..AND JUST CHILLIN...

I wouldnt do aromatherapy, that might make it worse since smell can contribute to it more. Lay down if you can and put a cold cloth on your forehead covering your eyes.

a bit of caffeine is the only thing that might help. Then go take a long nap in the darkest, quietest place you can.

a can of coke...I find that the sugar AND the caffiene help. Lay down in the dark with a hot water bottle behind your neck and an icepack on your forehead and you should fall into a blissful sleep.
