How long does the a&e department usually take to see a person?

Depends on what time you go and where you go, on a friday night, forget it! All depends on whats up with you, if it is not too serious go to your gp!

Ruthie
depends how serious the injury is - i once tore me ligaments in me knee and man that was sore as heck!

It depends on how busy they are and how seriously you are injured, last time I went I had to wait six hours.[got bit by iguana]

omnigomni
depends how busy they are, what day of the week its, how big the hospital is, time of day, etc. i dont think there is a usual.

Boris
They aim to see and treat within 4 hours.

It depends on how many people are being seen to.

In England it can be up to 8 hours! Depending on the matter ( they sometimes say its not importance it's who gets here first but obviously thts not true because you couldn't leave a man dying!) If its serious immediately but 1 1/2 - 2 hours is pretty good. It really depends on the time of day. And problem....I don't know how long it takes in America...I don't know where your from because you didn't say! For children it's always quicker but due to some idotic parents who go to the hospital over a cold instead of going via the doc first it can be upto 3 hours. You get checked over first to assess you within 15mins. It also can depends if the staff are in a good mood/tiredness....im getting real sleepy now...Hope that helped in some way...I know if I was reading it...I don't think it would help me but good-night anyway thanks for the points!

Depends how urgent you are....the receptionist catorgarises you when you go in....but on average about an hour where i live.

TRIAGE IS FRENCH FOR SORTING
THE FIRST PROCESS IN ER.
THEY DETERMINE THE URGENCY OF YOUR ILLNESS TO BE TAKEN IN DEPENDS ON SIZE OF HOSPITAL AND THE MAN POWER BEHIND IT, THE AVAILABILITY OF BEDS AND THE SEVERITY OF OTHER CASES ALREADY INSIDE.
IT IS COMPLICATED INSIDE. BEEN THERE DONE THAT!

Sexy Red
First off all it depends how ill you are or if your a walking patient. You need to see the Receptionist first who will take all your datails and your medical problem you are going in there for, then you will have to go to the nxt desk and see the Triage Nurse will be access your injuries and she will pritise your injurie or problem.Kids normally have a higher prioty. The time you have to wait usually depends how busy the staff are too and how many patients are waiting before you.

Usually you get checked over within 10 minutes then they see you in order of importance, they won't examine your sore throat while a man walks in with a missing arm will they? :)
Less serious is probably around an hour or so, might be longer if your living in a big city.

ALAN Q
Hours, darlin, hours.

BUT, they probably do triage, so if you are seriously ill, you should be seen quickly. If not , go to a walk-in centre if you have one, or your doctor. Or NHS direct, but their advice is oftern dodgy.

beckywecky
It depends on where you live, what time it is and the severity of your injury.
When I lived in Coventry I broke my arm in an evening and I was waiting for 7 hours. I did the same thing when I moved to Ayr, Scotland and I was only waiting for an hour. Yes I know I'm a clumsy old crow lol...

My daughter cut her head while on holiday in Bournemouth. She was out of there with stitches within an hour. People were complaining that was too long to be there , but in my area it would have been a four hour wait. Good on you Bournemouth.

The waiting time according to Health Ministers is supposed to be less than 4 hours but it varies according to the size of the hospital
