Nearly 24 hours without a cigarette?
any tips for when you get the craving (apart from eating!!)
Additional Details
thanks everyone xx
some great advice, and encouragement

paddypower69
sugar free chewing gum, i have been using that and i have had no cigarette since Jan 1st! Good luck my friend, just think when the no smoking laws come into play it will be easier!

whenwhalesfly
GREAT FOR YOU. I am back of you 100%. When you inhale smoke it constricts the blood vessels. That is very bad on the heart. I had 4 bypass surgery in 97' and I haven't had a cigarette since. If that won't make a person stop smoking nothing will.

Most of all, try to keep your hands busy. Try not to think of one of those things. Try also chewing gum.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND I HOPE TO SEE ANOTHER QUESTION ON HERE STATING IN SOME WAY THAT YOU HAVE TOTALLY QUIT.

chew gum

marebear803
Deffinatly chew gum..Maybe try Niccorette...it really helps...

But try not to eat. Most women who quit smoking gain weight, due to eating to replace the urge to smoke. Keep your hands busy and do things where you cant smoke..Hide or throw away your ashtrays so you have no place to ash. And keep in mind that you want to quit...YOU WANT TO QUIT!! Its a health concern and you dont want to do it anymore....It will help if you have something to keep your hands busy, and that is one of the most important things to do when you really want to smoke...If you scrapbook or knit...it helps! Knitting is what helped me quit...I made 14 scarves before I was completely done smoking and didnt want one anymore!! now I can make gloves, certain types of sweaters, blankets...Yah know its fun when you see that you can make something functional yourself!! GOOD LUCK and dont GIVE in to the cravings!! Typing and being on the computer is good too, but some poeple like to smoke while they browse the net or whatever!! SO Stay away from things that you normal smoke doing!!

GOOD LUCK!!

Well done love.

I stopped at 6am Monday, its now 2pm Wednesday.

Got patches, but not used one yet, am just using the gum, about 6 pieces a day.

Don't know about you, but I been smoking 20-40 a day for 20 years now.

Sorry, but my way of dealing with it is to eat, little and often.

Might put some weight on, but rather that than smoke.

Besides, I can exercise and diet later, when I ain't so stressed

when u get a craving keep your hands busy, get up and do some housework , the craving only lasts 4 a little while and you'll have a nice clean house as well as getting some exercise

I quit 2 years ago, succesfully. The first 24 hours are the hardest, the first week also is going to be hard. Just think to yourself this is going to get easier and easier. That's the way I did it.

claireyC
chew gum, eats sweets, when I give up I always have a pen in my mouth, dont know why but it stops the craving, the other thing you can do is drink a pint of water!

cheeky
i dont smoke but i know what you mean
throw the packs away and try not to buy anymore
do stuff you think is really funso you forget about them
or theres that Nicotine thingy

peter gunn
stick something in your mouth.
A big part of smoking addiction is to do with the habit of lighting and putting cigarettes in your mouth. Replace the cigarette with a substitute like a lollie or what worked great for me liquorice wood(hope i spelled that correctly)

Apart from have a cigarette, which is what I'd do, try some nicotine Gum - you can get it from a chemist without a prescription.

Well done! keep it up! If you start to get a bad craving, try and close your eyes and breathe steadily in and out, the craving will pass in about one minute. Good luck

girlybutton
time the craving, see if you can last 3 mins, then 3 hours, then 3 days etc.... If craving is really bad go and brush your teeth vigourously, it leaves you feeling refreshed and you won't want a smoke. good luck!

Jes
Awesome!!! Put your mind on something else. Go for a walk. Take up a hobby. Don't let your mind become idle. Keep yourself busy. Avoid things that cause you to want a cigarette. (What are things you normally do when you smoke? Avoid them.) I am soooooooo happy for you, it's a hard thing but you can do it!!

Benefits of giving up smoking!

Within........... You can expect

20 minutes

Your blood pressure and pulse rate to return to normal. The temperature of your hands and feet will also have returned to normal.

8 hours

Your blood oxygen levels to have increased to normal limits and carbon monoxide levels to have dropped to normal.

24 Hours

Your risk of sudden heart attack will have substantially reduced

48 Hours

Nerve endings to start re-growing and your sense of smell and taste to begin returning to normal.

72 hours

Your entire body to test 100% Nicotine-free with over 90% of all Nicotine metabolites to have now passed through your body. You can also expect the symptoms of chemical withdrawal to have peaked in intensity. Your bronchial tubes will begin relaxing and thus make breathing easier, and your lung capacity will also begin to increase.

10 – 14 days

Your body to have adjusted to the physical functioning without Nicotine and the 3,500 particles and more than 500 gases present in each puff.

1 to 3 months

Your circulation to have improved substantially, for walking to have become easier, and your overall lung function to have shown an amazing increase of up to thirty percent.

3 to 9 months

Any sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath to have decreased. Lung health improved to the extent that they have ability to handle mucus, keep clean, and reduce infections. Your body's overall energy will have increased.

1 year

Your excess risk of coronary heart disease to drop to less than half that of a smoker.

5 years

Your risk of stroke is reduced to that of a non-smoker.

10 years

Your risk of death from lung cancer to have decreased by almost half if you were an average smoker (one pack a day). Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus is now half that of a smoker's.

15 years

Your risk of coronary heart disease to now be that of a person who has never smoked. Your overall risk of death has returned to nearly that of a person who has never smoked.

Get Nicorette gum. Or carry twizzlers with you, the whole shape thing, and putting them into your mouth helps (so I'm told).
Keep up the good work. You can do it!

Hang in there, you can make it if you want to. Just 6 more days!

Go where people can't smoke.

Exercise

Chew gum, eat carots, Celery sticks.

Visit your friends that don't smoke.

Your worse enemy right now...are people who smoke around you, a place you can buy cigarettes, etc.........stay away from them.

Vitamic C Chewable (fruit flavor)

Good Luck, I know you can do it!

AJay
Well done! Kepp up the good work!

THE CRAVING IS IN YOUR HEAD GIRL. IF YOU HAVE GONE 24 HOURS WITH OUT A SMOKE, YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY TOLD YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN DO IT.

IT IS YOUR OWN TOUGH RESOLVE THAT IS GOING TO SEE YOU THROUGH, SO DON'T LOOSE HOPE & STICK TO YOUR DECESION..............

Congratulations!!! What ever you do, don't go back to smoking. I think the best way to not smoke is to realize what you have just done for your body and that is you have quit poisoning it. Within just a few days you will breathe easier( after you cough up a lot of junk from your lungs).Within a few months your lungs start to heal, you will have more energy and self-respect.If you have children in the house with you, quitting means that they won't have damaged lungs either. Do it for you and your family.
