Sprained foot or broke?
I was vacationing in Virginia, and my brother has a bed that is higher than me standing. In the middle of the night , I got out of the bed and landed on my left foot and saw stars. The right side of the foot is all black and blue, the foot is twice the size, and the bottom of my foot is horribly bruised. I iced it and elevated for two straight days, and it looked better, than had to put shoes on and walk a mile at the airport to get home. Now it is throbbing again and bruising more. Could it be sprained or broken? If sprained, no point in going the the docs. for what can they do? And what more can I do to fix this? Is it broke or sprained, and how can you tell? Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's sprained. Well just keep doing the elevation and icing.

When you can start moving it again, start to move your foot around. Kind of like exercise it. B/c once it starts healing and you don't move it, it'll get stiff. And you want to try to get back as much range of movement as you can.

If you can, go to the local drug store and buy an air cast or some ace wrap to keep it tight (not too tight) and protect it during the healing process..

Hope this works for you...it's a pain. I've have a few before, but honestly it's all about time. It will take a couple of weeks.

Good luck!

PS You can also go to the doctors to get an xray just to be sure. I did before to play it safe, but it was just sprained...VERY badly lol.

If you broke your foot odds are you wouldn't be walking on it. That and you can usually hear bones break when it happens. Nice loud pop. It sounds like a really bad sprain, my boyfriend just did it a couple months ago. What you need is ice as often as possible, elevation, dont walk on it, ace bandage when you absoultely have to walk for support, and Advil for the swelling (600 mg evey 4 hours constitutes an anti-inflamitory reaction) just make sure you take the Advil with food otherwise you may end up with an upset stomach.

Actually, there are things that may need to be done for a sprain, including casting. I spent six weeks in plaster for a bad sprain in college. Soft tissue damage may even need a surgical repair and can cause more disability or take longer to heal than a simple fracture, especially just a cracked bone.

Unless bone is poking out or grossly deformed, in which case you can be pretty sure it's a fracture, you can't tell just by looking. You need an x-ray and a doctor's exam and if it's not fractured, they may even do an MRI.

By the way, the cold and elevation were the right thing to do but it would have been better to use crutches and rest it as well.

Go to the doctor. If even a sprain isn't better in a few days, it needs to be seen.

you need an x-ray to rule out a fracture......If it is sprained you will still need a brace. Sounds like a break

You may want to head to the docs just to rule out a fracture. An avulsion fracture (where a piece of the bone gets pulled off but is still attached to the tendon) can have many of the same signs & symptoms of a severe ankle sprain. Do did right by keeping your leg elevated and icing it. Continue to do this. Limit the amount of walking that you do as you want the swelling to be eliminated. Depending on the severity you may require physical therapy to regain motion, strength, and improve stability. Bracing may help in the short-term.

Go see a doctor.

Only tendons and ligaments can get sprained, the tarasals/metatarsals/phalanges would be the broken parts. You probably sprained it to the second degree.

i would advise you to see a doctor because i had the same problem when i fell off of a skate board, i thought my foot was just a mild sprain

i went to the doctor a few days later and found out that i had torn 6 or 7 liagaments in my ankle

i ended up in a cast for 9 weeks
