What is the best thing to eat before a long run, say 10 miles?
I am planning on running a 10 mile run in June I would like to know what is the best thing to eat or drink the morning of and the night before.

Yes, look into carb loading. Its best if you do it at a rate that is right for the amount of mass you carry, ahh your weight that is.
And it is best to start loading 3-5 days before the athletic event.
Find out your Vo2 max, get a fit test so you know exactly what your body needs. Its scientific!

when i ran my only ever marathon, the night before i loaded up, i had spaghetti, pancakes and other high carb items, i dotn believe i ate much if anything the morning of the race though i had my famly waiting along teh route with palin chocolate hershey bars. sorry thats all i can remember but it was about 28 years ago i ran the marathon, good luck

So annomus
bagels, toast or something light. I usually eat very little until i am done running or jogging. If your body is not used to this activity, eating too much could make you sick

10miles run needs extra energy extra liquid by which the body is kept at natural lwvel becuse for 10 miles a lot ofcallories are burnt. Take plenty of milk, fresh juices and a lot of food having fats.

I would be sure to take a couple of Ex-Lax the night before to lighten my load before the race . . .

pasta is an excellent source of food to eat before a long run!! hope this helps, and good luck!
My favorite is pasta with butter and parmasian cheese! :>]

Glucon-D - this will put life into your life as soon as you drink.

Drink a glass of water mixed with 2 table spoons of Glucon-D before and after jog.

lot and lot of furit

pretty ysay
Well, you may eat lots of pasta the night before and some bananas and yogurt in the morning. Why don't you try it one week before your long run?

well: according to" Fruits like Orange juce they has Vitamin
C & also good for breakfast drink then dinner time I eat
some Veggies"

Pasta or Yogurt

Dark Helmet

Carb, carbs and more carbs. Do energy bars and gatorade. Bananas and bagels.

bananas and oranges right before, carbs 6 hrs or more before.

Fruit and water

I suggest getting hammered the night before. Stay out until the bar closes. There are lots of carbs in beer.

The next morning you will probably be tempted by the hair of the dog. DO NOT drink more alcohol. Your best bet is a greasy breakfast sandwich.

But seriously... the day before a big run I always drink absurd amounts of water. Do the standard pee test and make sure your urine is clear colored. You can get water "poisoning" but that's only if you drink an insane amount of water. I eat things high in protein and carbs the night before (chicken and pasta with red sauce). That isn't going to affect you very much to be honest. The morning of, eat something carby and sugary. That's about the only time I'll drop $3 on a health foods bar. Some caffeine right before would be nice too. Don't drink a lot since it is a diuretic and you will have to stop and pee during the race with all that water in you. Try to move your bowels the morning of the race... ew, but it will make a difference.

Uhh, the night before, pasta is good. Pretty much pasta is what you want, and for the morning of, I'd grab some yogurt, or some good cereal like Honey Bunches of Oats, milk, orange juice. Don't eat anything for about 2 hours before, you can drink stuff, just make sure you're hydrated for the run.

I recommend juicing some vegetables for the mineral and electrolyte content. Then have a bowl of oatmeal with a big pat of butter.
The oatmeal is a carbohydrate with a low glycemic index meaning that energy will be released more slowly into your body to help you finish the race.
The butter keeps the oatmeal in your belly longer and also provides some energy near the end of the race.
The day before you want some fiber in your meal so that you empty out your bowels before the race. If necessary take a laxative three hours before the race.
The above advice is pure theory from a genuine amateur. Good luck.

Bananas and PowerBars work for me. Oh yeah, Hydrate vigorously beginning a few days before the race.

Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate, sodium and Potassium are very good, make sure to eat lots of protein. keep your activity to a minimum the week before.

carbo load the day before (french bread, pasta, rice?, mainly bread). On the morning, water, bananas, nothing heavy.

Something with a lot of potasium (banannas). And water. If your doing that long of a run, dont drink any sport drinks, just water, anything else will just weigh you down.

night before... pasta.

morning of...I like bananas and power bars or equivalent.

More importantly is what you eat after--you need protein to rebuild your muscles

Whatever you eat for the race, make sure you've been doing it for all your training runs. Don't try anything new.

Id say the best thing to eat for your 10 mile run would be bananas.
Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber. The fruit gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proved that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

When my husband runs and trains for marathons, what he usually does is stock up on carbs the night before, gets a lot of sleep, and then gets up and eats either half a plain or salted bagel, or a banana and drinks some water. While he's running, he eats a gel (called Gu) which provides him with energy and nutrients during the run. Drink lots of water when you are thirsty, and if you start feeling dehydrated, have a packet of salt with more water -- it's gross but it helps you to retain that hydration longer. I know that when he's done with a long distance run, he eats like a horse, so make sure there's food at the finish line for you. Best of luck!

I'm from Boston and we have the Boston Marathon every year. All you hear about is how the runners stock up on pasta and orange juice. They're suppose to be really good for runners.

Lots of carbs. Breads, pasta, etc. You'll need the sustained energy.

Eat Pasta the night before and that morning eat light, like a banana or a bagel. you can also go to Runners World website for tips on what to do before a long run at www.runnersworld.com

Make sure to run on an empty stomach.
Don't eat at least 4-5 hours before running or drink water right before to avoid cramps.
Eat light and healthy meals prior to the run and run each night so the day of the run you don't get drained after 3 miles.
Good luck
