Why is marijuanan illegal if it kills less people than cigarettes and alcohol combined?
I know a lot of people think marijuana kills and is a horrible drug but some of these people are probably smoking a cigarette as they are saying that. Don't tell me it kills my brain cells, so does alcohol, so does cigarettes, so does sitting in rush hour traffic inhaling all of those exhaust fumes. What is your opinion of why it is illegal?
Additional Details
Wow, again with the stereotyping. I am an avid pot smoker and I am working 2 jobs to pay my way through college. Explain to me how it kills you. KATY i have been smoking for a while and not had ONE of those things you mentioned lmao!

tim d
because they don't want some doped up douche working in society.

Princess of the Realm
If pot was a legal substance, it would kill many, many more people. It's illegal for the reason Opium, Cocaine, etc, is illegal, it's mind altering.

I think that marijuana and cigarettes should become illegal. But to answer your question, it kills less people because it is illegal. If it wasn't, more people would use it and more would die. But I believe that both of them should be made illegal because of what they do to you.

It leads to laziness and unclear thoughts. It also is a gateway drug, whether you believe so or now.

Basically if everyone in America were on pot, we wouldn't be what we are today.

because they haven't figured out how to grow it without it being stolen, how to package it ,and market it to the masses and how to sell it at a profit. alcohol was once illegal and it kills more people than marijuana or cigarettes. big money in alcohol.personally, I think marijuana makes you stupid and lazy.even after your not high. it affects you forever, and kills your brain cells. that's probably the real reason it's illegal . I just thought the other smart *** reason would entertain you all

What a bunch of crazy answers!

Now, son, dontcha start trying to use logic when it comes to the law.

My favorite reason that weed is illegal is a conspiracy theory. Big Oil Companies saw Hemp as a threat! Back in the 20's, I reckon they saw the oils from hemp as a threat to their way of life and decided to crash on it as a 'high'.
At the time, hemp was used for hundreds of things -- making clothes, making oil and .. uh .. gettting high.

I'm so happy of the trend in medicinal marijuana.

It's legal to smoke

Everyone I know is going getting a prescription for some awesome highs. I keep asking if their insurance is paying for it but they say, "uh...I forget".

I mean, what cop is going to bust an AIDS victim? The police are simply refusing to deal with it and I say ... right on!

Elizabeth R
It's a depressant--like alcohol. And if it's legal, the gov't can't tax it because people can just grow it in their backyard. I dunno---talk to your councilman. But just because you think the law is stupid, just don't go out there and break it. You can't fight it unless you really take it up. Other than that, I can't say.

Dude, didn't you watch reefer madness? Marijuana makes you kill people. It is a proven scientific fact.

starting over
I don't know why it is illegal, I have not smoked it in a long time, well over 20 years, but I did for quite some time, regularly.

It did not hurt me in any way, I did not use other drugs, I did not get hangovers, I never had any problems.

I also used to work in an emergency room, we never had someone high on pot who came in because of a fight, I never saw someone high on pot who was nasty or mean. I can not say that about alcohol.

I think the government should regulate it and tax it. It would sure help the deficit. Definitely should be approved for medical use.

I was told by my neurologist that it would help the pain that I have. I have not tried it, but I know one of the drugs I was on, had me so screwed up that I would get lost going home and I could not remember people's names or anything. Being on that drug, I lost 3 years of my life, I just don't remember it. Again, I never had an experience like that when I smoked pot.

William Randolph Hearst wanted it so and he got it in 1937

The government cannot stop people from growing it in the backyard or in pots ;) and there is already a sophisticated system for obtaining and distribution by unofficial channels in place so there would be difficulty collecting all the tax money that would most naturally be placed upon it the minute it ever did become legal. But until the gov't figures out a way to control and tax every bit of it,none of it is gonna be legal.

I'm not entirely positive on why it is illegal, but I would guess the reason it kills less people is because less people have access to it, and less people smoke marijuana than cigarettes and drinking alcohol.

That's like asking, "what makes the world go round." First of all, yes, Marijuana kills a hell of a lot less people than cigarettes or alchohol and...it kills just as many, or less, brain cells than alcohol or cigarettes.

So then why is marijuana still illegal you ask? Because Corporate America can make a lot more money off of Ciggies and Alchies than they can off of marijuana.

Corporations make more $$ from Alcohol and Cigarettes because:

#1 The best weed is not made in the USA. People would probably being to import weed from other countries.
#2 Cigarettes are very very addictive...weed is not that addictive. So you have many, many, many repeat offenders. Alchohol is also very addictive.

There are many other reasons why Americans corporations don't bother trying to sell weed, but basically, it won't make them any money. If weed won't make anyone any money, then they won't bother trying to get laws passed to make it legal.

***By the way, not everything is a freakin' conspiracy!

i think it should be up to the person.i know if it was legal i would smoke it on a daily basis but my husband is really against it and its not worth losing my marriage over so i dont.and hes right why can you get drunk and its okay or smoke ciggarettes and its okay but you want to light up a fatty and the world comes to an end.in some states you can even get it if your sick and it helps the pain so why not just legalize it and make all of us who dont do for other reasons able to make our own choice of doing so?i have cronic pain and take many pain meds perscribed by a dr and thats okay but dont smoke weed to make people like myself feel better or people who just want to do it like drinking.make it leagal with regulations just like alcohol.so for all you people who disagree learn to let people make their own decisions in life.

cause if it was legal it would kill even more people then cigarettes

[email protected]
A program on the history channel called The History of Drugs(or something like it) put forth the theory that it only became illegal under the controlled substance act as a way of discriminating against mexican immigrants. This was in the 20s or 30s I believe.

Marijuana wouldn't kill more people than cigarettes if it was legal.

Cigarettes and alcohol would still dominate that.

I say legalize it.

The goverment makes more money keeping it illegal then if it was legal. It is no different than drinking or cigarettes.

First of all, this is information on marijuana from a purely factual stand point, so even if you are against marijuana PLEASE READ THIS. there are too many ignorant people against marijuana...you dont have to smoke it to be for it's legalization.

1. Marijuana causes brain damage

The most celebrated study that claims to show brain damage is the rhesus monkey study of Dr. Robert Heath, done in the late 1970s. This study was reviewed by a distinguished panel of scientists sponsored by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. Their results were published under the title, Marijuana and Health in 1982. Heath's work was sharply criticized for its insufficient sample size (only four monkeys), its failure to control experimental bias, and the misidentification of normal monkey brain structure as "damaged". Actual studies of human populations of marijuana users have shown no evidence of brain damage. For example, two studies from 1977, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed no evidence of brain damage in heavy users of marijuana. That same year, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially came out in favor of decriminalizing marijuana. That's not the sort of thing you'd expect if the AMA thought marijuana damaged the brain.

2. Marijuana damages the reproductive system

This claim is based chiefly on the work of Dr. Gabriel Nahas, who experimented with tissue (cells) isolated in petri dishes, and the work of researchers who dosed animals with near-lethal amounts of cannabinoids (i.e., the intoxicating part of marijuana). Nahas' generalizations from his petri dishes to human beings have been rejected by the scientific community as being invalid. In the case of the animal experiments, the animals that survived their ordeal returned to normal within 30 days of the end of the experiment. Studies of actual human populations have failed to demonstrate that marijuana adversely affects the reproductive system.

3. Marijuana is a "gateway" drug -- it leads to hard drugs

This is one of the more persistent myths. A real world example of what happens when marijuana is readily available can be found in Holland. The Dutch partially legalized marijuana in the 1970s. Since then, hard drug use -- heroin and Cocaine -- have DECLINED substantially. If marijuana really were a gateway drug, one would have expected use of hard drugs to have gone up, not down. This apparent "negative gateway" effect has also been observed in the United States. Studies done in the early 1970s showed a negative correlation between use of marijuana and use of alcohol. A 1993 Rand Corporation study that compared drug use in states that had decriminalized marijuana versus those that had not, found that where marijuana was more available -- the states that had decriminalized -- hard drug abuse as measured by emergency room episodes decreased. In short, what science and actual experience tell us is that marijuana tends to substitute for the much more dangerous hard drugs like alcohol, Cocaine, and heroin.

4. Marijuana suppresses the immune system

Like the studies claiming to show damage to the reproductive system, this myth is based on studies where animals were given extremely high -- in many cases, near-lethal -- doses of cannabinoids. These results have never been duplicated in human beings. Interestingly, two studies done in 1978 and one done in 1988 showed that hashish and marijuana may have actually stimulated the immune system in the people studied.

5. Marijuana is much more dangerous than tobacco

Smoked marijuana contains about the same amount of carcinogens as does an equivalent amount of tobacco. It should be remembered, however, that a heavy tobacco smoker consumes much more tobacco than a heavy marijuana smoker consumes marijuana. This is because smoked tobacco, with a 90% addiction rate, is the most addictive of all drugs while marijuana is less addictive than caffeine. Two other factors are important. The first is that paraphernalia laws directed against marijuana users make it difficult to smoke safely. These laws make water pipes and bongs, which filter some of the carcinogens out of the smoke, illegal and, hence, unavailable. The second is that, if marijuana were legal, it would be more economical to have Cannabis drinks like bhang (a traditional drink in the Middle East) or tea which are totally non-carcinogenic. This is in stark contrast with "smokeless" tobacco products like snuff which can cause cancer of the mouth and throat. When all ofthese facts are taken together, it can be clearly seen that the reverse is true: marijuana is much SAFER than tobacco.

6. Legal marijuana would cause carnage on the highways

Although marijuana, when used to intoxication, does impair performance in a manner similar to alcohol, actual studies of the effect of marijuana on the automobile accident rate suggest that it poses LESS of a hazard than alcohol. When a random sample of fatal accident victims was studied, it was initially found that marijuana was associated with RELATIVELY as many accidents as alcohol. In other words, the number of accident victims intoxicated on marijuana relative to the number of marijuana users in society gave a ratio similar to that for accident victims intoxicated on alcohol relative to the total number of alcohol users. However, a closer examination of the victims revealed that around 85% of the people intoxicated on marijuana WERE ALSO INTOXICATED ON ALCOHOL. For people only intoxicated on marijuana, the rate was much lower than for alcohol alone. This finding has been supported by other research using completely different methods. For example, an economic analysis of the effects of decriminalization on marijuana usage found that states that had reduced penalties for marijuana possession experienced a rise in marijuana use and a decline in alcohol use with the result that fatal highway accidents decreased. This would suggest that, far from causing "carnage", legal marijuana might actually save lives.

7. Marijuana "flattens" human brainwaves

This is an out-and-out lie perpetrated by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. A few years ago, they ran a TV ad that purported to show, first, a normal human brainwave, and second, a flat brainwave from a 14-year-old "on marijuana". When researchers called up the TV networks to complain about this commercial, the Partnership had to pull it from the air. It seems that the Partnership faked the flat "marijuana brainwave". In reality, marijuana has the effect of slightly INCREASING alpha wave activity. Alpha waves are associated with meditative and relaxed states which are, in turn, often associated with human creativity.

8. Marijuana is more potent today than in the past

This myth is the result of bad data. The researchers who made the claim of increased potency used as their baseline the THC content of marijuana seized by police in the early 1970s. Poor storage of this marijuana in un-air conditioned evidence rooms caused it to deteriorate and decline in potency before any chemical assay was performed. Contemporaneous, independent assays of unseized "street" marijuana from the early 1970s showed a potency equivalent to that of modern "street" marijuana. Actually, the most potent form of this drug that was generally available was sold legally in the 1920s and 1930s by the pharmaceutical company Smith-Klein under the name, "American Cannabis".

9. Marijuana impairs short-term memory

This is true but misleading. Any impairment of short-term memory disappears when one is no longer under the influence of marijuana. Often, the short-term memory effect is paired with a reference to Dr. Heath's poor rhesus monkeys to imply that the condition is permanent.

10. Marijuana lingers in the body like DDT

This is also true but misleading. Cannabinoids are fat soluble as are innumerable nutrients and, yes, some poisons like DDT. For example, the essential nutrient, Vitamin A, is fat soluble but one never hears people who favor marijuana prohibition making this comparison.

11. There are over a thousand chemicals in marijuana smoke

Again, true but misleading. The 31 August 1990 issue of the magazine Science notes that of the over 800 volatile chemicals present in roasted COFFEE, only 21 have actually been tested on animals and 16 of these cause cancer in rodents. Yet, coffee remains legal and is generally considered fairly safe.

12. No one has ever died of a marijuana overdose

This is true. It was put in to see if you are paying attention. Animal tests have revealed that extremely high doses of cannabinoids are needed to have lethal effect. This has led scientists to conclude that the ratio of the amount of cannabinoids necessary to get a person intoxicated (i.e., stoned) relative to the amount necessary to kill them is 1 to 40,000. In other words, to overdose, you would have to consume 40,000 times as much marijuana as you needed to get stoned. In contrast, the ratio for alcohol varies between 1 to 4 and 1 to 10. It is easy to see how upwards of 5000 people die from alcohol overdoses every year and no one EVER dies of marijuana overdoses.

This is what the government won't tell to us Americans. They are too stubborn to take back a law that has been in place for 69 years (Marijuana Tax Act of 1937).

Along with making marijuana illegal, the government spends billions of dollars each year fighting the drug war to keep marijuana and other drugs out of this country. Now i would like you to think of one person in this country that is unable to obtain marijuana or any other drug. If marijuana was legal, it would be create a market in the USA and there would be no reason for drug smuggling. Because marijuana would then be contained in the USA and smuggling would no longer be a problem, the government could much more easily control the use of the substance. Since everyone would now be buying their marijuana from stores in the USA, there would be a tax on this creating billions more in revenue for the government to add on to the billions no longer being spent on the war against marijuana.

A very high % of prisoners are non-violent drug offenders. With marijuana legalized, we wouldnt have to worry about drug dealers as much, which means less people going to prison, which in turn means more tax money to spend on something more important, like the HUGE deficit we have managed to create.

Marijuana might be a harmful substance, but so are many other substances that are legal, many of which are much more harmful. Marijuana is actually EASIER to obtain because it is illegal and is costing us billions of dollars to make it easier, why would we want to do that?

I hope you feel more informed after this. PLEASE REPOST THIS, whether you are for or against its legalization, people need to know the facts, not just that marijuana gets you high and screws up your life (which for the most part is not true). Also, tell everyone you know about these facts. Marijuana should be legal and the government will not do anything about it unless we stand up and voice the TRUTH

If you have more questions check out www.norml.com

have you really ever heard some one die from smoking it? come on, the only reason they get in a car accident is because they are drunk or on something else.

They just like to have an excuse and limit the people of the united states so they can keep control of us....

mrs. nighs
I rememer all the idiots in my old high school asked this same thing and it's because when your doing a job in any field you dont want a stoner doing it they'll probley f*up my dad had a stoner that worked for him who drove his truck off the cliff while at work

Because the best weed isn't made in the USA.

It happened in the 60's just see if you can find all those old videos they used to push...sure a lot of what they said was false but it worked. However, it really isn't the smartest thing to do...

michael o
the truth is, if the gov. had its way all of it would be illegal! If the gov. tried to make alcohol and cigarettes illegal do you think people would listen? It would be impossible to illegalize it. Its just a way for the gov. to control people.

I'm thinking if they legalized it than ppl would report in more that they do use it thus it would change statistics to the correct consequences of marijauana use. Either positive or negative.

All I know is all the marijuana users in my school are C students. And a family friend who uses marijuana admits her motor ability skills aren't as good as they once were because of it and she's only 29!!

Well; cigarettes and alcohol combined kill more people that heroin and crack combined, but that's not a very good argument for shooting smack or smoking crack. The only reason tobacco and alcohol are legal is the historical precedent, if they were discovered today there is no way they would be tolerated. That being said, I accept that the decriminalization of Cannabis is a good idea. No one has been prosecuted for less than 3 grams in my jurisdiction for years, so it's just not an issue where I live.

What about medicinal effects?
No hang over the next day...
Fabulous appetite inducer...

It's illegal because the government hasn't figured out how to regulate and tax it. They can't control the growth or the sellling and therefor they get no money from it. That's why it's illegal.

I dont find anything wrong with weed, though I dont use it myself. Alcohol is MUCH worse than marajuana in all respects and it's legal cause people rioted when they banned it. It makes no sense really, Canada allows marajuana and they dont seem to have many problems with it. Just apply the same rules to drinking if people care that much. No being high while at work, just like drinking, no smoking in confined public places, just like cigarettes, and so on.

I agree. Marijuana is less harmful than cigarettes. If corporations could market and sell it legally, they would love it. If tobacco came on the market today as a new product it would be listed as an illegal drug by the FDA.
