You absolutely can get oral herpes from kissing- but if you do, you're in good company. Almost all adults have oral herpes, and many have it since childhood (think, grandma giving you big smooches.)

Yes you can get the ORAL type of herpes, what causes cold sores. This is not the std type of herpes, it's a slightly different form of the same virus.
Cold sores are very commonly passed by kissing some one that has them. This can happen even during child hood.
