♥salina♥ | a bloodwork question...? | can u tell if u have smokesd or have nicotine or if u have smoked by yer blood?

no |

The only way to determine if a patient is a smoker through bloodwork is with an ABG (arterial blood gas). This is when they obtain blood from an artery (not like other blood tests which use blood from the veins). The results may be consistent with signs of lung disease which is caused by smoking. If you are concerned about being found out on routine bloodwork this will not happen. |

Its possible but it is not tested for on a chem 7, chem 20, or a tox screen |

There is another test besides the ABG and it is performed on blood, urine, or saliva. The test that your medical provider could do to see if you are smoking is for cotenine (a byproduct of nicotine). Nicotine is out of your system fairly quickly, but the cotenine has a half-life of 16 to 19 hours, so it is detectable for 4 to 7 days. |

The only way is through a blood test (arterial blood gas) that has a specific panel called co-oximetry .... smokers have elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels (COHb) if they are actively smoking .. but ...that within even as little as 12 hr after cessation of smoking, carboxyhemoglobin change towards normal values. |
