My mom stops breathing in her sleep?
Okay... 3 days ago my family and I were at a hotel with a friend, right? Well, in the middle of the night my mom's friend starts shaking her and she wakes up. They said, "You weren't breathing." My mom said, "What?" And they said, "There was no air coming from you."

So, my mom tells me this happened, right? So, last night I woke up from in the middle of the night... and had an urge to go check on her. I couldn't hear her breathing from across the room. So I go over there and look at her... and I don't know if it was just me... but... it didn't look like she was breathing. I woke her up and told her...

So... now tonight, I am freaking again. Am I stressing myself out, or is something really wrong?

~Please help!

~Thanks guys...

It's called Sleep Apnea. Its a very serious condition. It means a person sometimes stops breathing for a min. or more in their sleep. You need to take her to the doctor immediately to make sure THIS is not the problem. If it is, there are solutions. =)

It is very common to stop breathing while sleeping. While in the deepest part of rem your body shuts down to recharge. Your muscles stop working and your breathing slows way down. Some people suffer from sleep paralysis, meaning your mind is awake and your body is in rem 4 sleep and you can not move your body. Sleep apnea is a common name for it. She can go to her doctors but I am pretty sure if she is healthy in every way that it is no need for alarm.

Confused
she has sleep apnea she need to go the her dr. so he can take care of it by giving her a machine she hooks up to her that keeps her breathing

It's called sleep apnea and it's very common. But, she should get it checked out, cause it can cause brain problems down the road....she can go to a sleep clinic to get that checked out

IplayadoconTV
Seeings as how she manages to wake up every morning, I'd say you're just being weird. It could be that she has sleep apnea, but usually those people are VERY loud. Lot's of snoring and snorting. As long as she's not morbidly obese, I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

This very much could be sleep apnea. As all the other posts have said it is where your airway closes off and causes cessation of breathing. Although this is not an uncommon illness, it can be life threatening if left untreated. High blood pressure, stroke, congestive heart failure and possibly death are all on the list of potential illness that are directly correlated to sleep apnea. Your mother should get this diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to avoid these complications that will most likely occur if this is left untreated. Have her talk to her primary care physician and get a referral to your local sleep center. This is the only way you will know for sure how severe her condition may be. I wouldn't stress about it or keep waking her at night. The odds are that she has been sleeping this way for years and no one ever made her aware of it until now. Just get it checked out so that she wont have problems in the future. Best wishes and good luck.

Yes, this could potentially be obstructive sleep apnea as many people have said. She needs to speak with her doctor about it. Sleep apnea is a cessation of breathing during sleep. It can happen in any sleep stage. I've seen people fall fast asleep and start throwing apneas in stage two sleep.

Being overweight can be a contributing factor, but one does not necessarily have to be overweight. Some people also have slightly narrowed airways, for instance. Most people who have sleep apnea suffer from OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) that means that as your body relaxes your airways close up and become blocked. A frequent indicator of sleep apnea is loud snores that suddenly stop and then start up again usually with a loud sputtering sound and often with some bodily movement like a leg kick. People who have sleep apnea are generally very drowsy during the day and report that they just can't seem to get a good night's sleep.

Your mother's doctor may recommend a sleep study. Basically a technologist will apply electrodes to her and put respiratory belts on her and then she will be monitored as she sleeps in a quiet room. The technologist will keep an eye on her and watch on the computer and the video monitor for signs of sleep apnea. The doctor will then make a diagnosis based on the data collected. One of the most common ways to treat OSA is CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). It's a nasal mask attached to a machine that delivers air into your airway to help open it up. Good luck to you.

My husband does that, and yes there is something wrong. She needs to see a doctor. A doctor can treat it. One thing she can do is to rise the head of her bed up some, not way up, just enough to be comfortable. She should not be laying flat.

You should get it checked out by a doctor just to be safe. It sounds like your mom has sleep apnoea. It causes people to stop breathing temporarily during sleep. If you go to a doctor, they can give test during her sleep to make sure that she has it. There are three types: Central, Obstructive, and Complex. Don't worry so much. It's not a fatal disorder. It's rare for a person suffering with disorder to notice that they actually have it.

mrliteman001
She needs to get checked for sleep apnia sorry about the spelling

Jess
The last 25 people have been right, it is sleep apnea. Both of my parents use to have this (but both lost a lot of weight) and I suspect my fiancee has it too, because he has the same symptoms (however he is a very healthy weight).

Being overweight is a big reason for it, but other things can cause it. Ways to tell if you might have it include a feeling of being tired even after you wake up, headaches we you wake up and being fatigued during the day. You don't have to have a history of snoring to have sleep apnea.

It is something that can easily be treated with a sleep apnea machine -- something you have to get use to but the results are good enough you will appreciate it. However, it can be dangerous if its not treated, as people literally stop breathing in their sleep and their brain delays in telling them to wake up. Usually its just a delay, but sometimes they stop breathing long enough that they suffocate.

A good idea until she resolves this is for her to sleep with her head slightly elevated. I've also found that my finacee has a harder problem when he's sleeping on his back. Sleeping on his side seems to help. She needs to see a doctor. It will greatly improve her life, and can save her life. Good luck!

Winter Glory
that's called sleep apnea, she should see a sleep specialist about it

Could be sleep apnea. Lots of people have it and don't know it. She should have a sleep test done on her. There are various treatments for it.

She could have something called sleep apnea. It most commonly affects people who are overweight. It is a serious condition, but can be treated by sleeping with a special face mask and by losing weight. She should go see her doctor, they will most likely set up a sleep study where she spends the night at a medical facility and they monitor her.

this is a condition know as sleep apnea. It is a fairly common condition but can rarely result in serious consequences. While its usually nothing that serious it wouldn't be a bad thing to have your mom go in for a visit to the doctor

I would tell her to get to a doctor pronto! She could have sleep apnea which means she stops breathing during her sleep! It can be fatal if not treated!

Good Luck!

She might have sleep Apnea she should see her doctor about this to see about getting tested by a specialist

.
Sounds to me like she's suffering from sleep apnea.

Well I'm not an expert, but I have heard of something called "Sleep Apnea". It causes people to stop breathing for a second or two while sleeping. Sometimes it can be bad enough that some people may be required to use a breathing machine at night. It's something to think about, but don't stress over it. Its very common and easy to fix. Look it up on the net, and ask your doctor about it as soon as you can. Until then, have your mom sleep on her stomach, I heard that helps(but maybe thats just a rumor) Good Luck!

She might have sleep apnoea. Google it and you'll get heaps of info. She should see a doctor.

Your mom needs to go and get a sleep test done. It's very important and very simple. They will check everything out. Tell her how you are feeling and the sooner that she can get into the sleep study the better. You should be able to find a sleep center at your local hospital. Most insurances pay for it.

stressin
Tell her to go to the doctor for a sleep study. She probably has sleep apnea
