If I smoke just three or four cigarettes a day, will chances of lung disease still remain very high?
I've been smoking for around 2-3 months now, and I'm proud to say that I'm not a chain smoker, nor am I awfully addicted.

But I still get urges to smoke occasionally throughout the day, and I end up smoking around four cigarettes per day.

I understand there are many who smoke as much as 20 or even a pack of cigarettes a day, but I'm not in their league by a long shot.

The only downside is that I prefer to smoke my cigarettes filterless (branded ones, though, like Benson and Marlboro).

I'm 17, if I keep smoking for like 5-6 more years, will I still retain the high risk of lung disease in the future?

Thanks to all for their answers.

It won't be as high but still high enough to give you lung cancer later. All I can say is if you really want to quit, you will do it in less than 5-6 years, if you don't want to quit........smoke em if you got em.

Cigarettes are the number one killer in the U.S. today and you want to smoke. Smoking stops healing from any type of surgery quite a bit and slows down the healing process. Your only looking for trouble smoking.

Hello
Well guess what.......if people can get lung cancer and die even though they have never smoked a cigarette before, what do you think about you and your chances?

Stop smoking. It's unattractive, and it shows that you are a weak person. Plus it makes you smell terrible.

You say you "only" smoke 4 a day, well guess what....your cravings for nicotine will get worse and worse as you smoke......making you want more and more, that is how people become chain smokers.

You're "proud" that you're not a chain smoker or "awfully addicted" when you've only been smoking a couple of months? NO ONE's a chain smoker at first, genius, but you can bet your asss that the number of cigarettes you smoke per day WILL increase over time and you'll find this "non-addiction" will be damn hard to quit.

Now put down the cancer sticks. They make you and your breath smell like sh*t and your lungs don't appreciate the abuse.

There are other side affects to smoking other than respitory problems.

Cancer of the Tongue, Throat.

Mouth Sores, Dulling of various taste buds, Dulling of Smelling

Discoloration of the whites of your eyes (blood shot looking eyes).

Expense.

I gave up a few years ago after smoking for 22 years of around 20 a day.

Take Acids advice and give up now.

I just kicked the habit after 20 years. It wasn't fun, and my free advice to you is to quit now my friend, while it is still easy.

Regarding mortality and lung cancer, how many people die of some form of cancer? How many of those were smokers? How many of those were heavy smokers? I don't know the answers, but I don't think it matters - what you are asking is the equivalent of "if I play in traffic with my eyes just closed half of the time, do I have less chance of dying"? The only sane answer is "don't be stupid and do not play in traffic".

yes
if u smoke, health problems will follow.
QUIT!!!!!!!!!!

Ted
You're slowly becoming addicted. It's gradual.

When I was 17, I could go 2 or 3 days without a cigarette.

By the time I quit smoking at 24, I was smoking almost 50 a day, sometimes more when I drank.

It's a gradual process and some people are more prone to addictive behavior than others.

I did get lung disease from smoking, I was diagnosed with asthma 2 years ago. The less you smoke, the less chance you have of long term or serious effects, but it's still higher than if you didn't smoke at all.

Asif, dear, your chances do increase with your smoking, no matter how much or how little.

I've been around secondhand smoke for about 22 years now (thanks to my grandmother and yes I'm 22..thereabout), and have experienced various problems from being around it. As a child I had a lot of ear infections and sore throats, I had bronchitis quite a few times, and I've only now started experiencing sinus problems, probably seeing as how I still visit my grandmother regularly.

There was a point in time where I actually craved cigarettes, without having smoked them, which I'm sure sounds ridiculous. I tried it myself more than a few times, and even did so due to stress.

However, my health is more important, and I would like to have kids one day, which is something that smoking can hinder. Smoking does more harm in any way/shape/form than it "helps".

Not having been a "regular smoker" I can't say that I had to "quit", but I don't want to do anything that jeopardizes my future health, and for your own good, I'd advise the same for you.
