I am a softball pitcher and im reallllyyy good..and i want to go to college but my mom smokes(my dad stopped) and im wondering if the smoke will affect me and i wont be able to play in college...and how do i get her to stop...she always says stay off my back about it but i have so much anger built up and its like she is killing herself and me..she said when i want to quit i will.. I NEED HER TO STOP

talk to her.... im sure she'll stop if it's for ur education

tell her you cant believe how little she cares about you because shes damaging your health so much by second hand smoke. get a doctor to talk to her about how much second hand smoke is harming you. throw her cigarettes away constantly. show her how upset it makes you. TELL HER YOU WONT COME BACK HOME FOR ANY VISITS EVER AFTER YOU GO TO COLLEGE UNTIL SHE STOPS SMOKING. make her feel guilty and awful. you have to hit rock bottom b4 you realize you gotta stop

tht one silent kid
You cant really tell if its hurting u at first but a year living in that condition and u will be coughing alot
my dad used to smoke
every time I had the chance I would throw his cigarettes away

my mom got fed up with paying so much for cigarretes, and my dad got nicotine chewing gum and that was the end of it.

don't tell your mother what to do. she knows the risks. some people, ...that little bit of happiness is all they have. people are so convinced that a little bit of smoke in their face is GOING to give them cancer. well hey, do you drive one of those great big SUV's to the game that everyone else does? matter of fact, while you're there count how many you see in the lot. THAT's the reason everything has a slight coating of oil on it anymore. the air is already dirty. this is america, get used to it.

You can't make someone else do anything. You definitely can't make someone give up a tough habit like smoking. Speaking as someone who has quit, it's *extremely* difficult to do even when you want to. But that's the key: You can't quit if you don't really want to. Until the smoker genuinely wants to quit they won't have the inner fortitude to weather the cravings that will come. Even when I wanted to quit I still had lots of times where I back-stepped and cheated.

Second-hand smoke isn't great for you but no one has ever died from it that I've heard of. It won't stop you playing softball if you want to. Your mom seems pretty set on not quitting so the best you can hope for at this point is to get your parents to compromise with you. Ask your mom if she would stop smoking in the house or, if that's not possible, see if she'll consent to keeping her smoking to just one room. My dad started off like that: First he quit smoking in the house, then eventually he quit smoking except after meals and right before and after bedtime. It took about 5 years for him to quit but considering he smoked for over 50 years, 5 years of habit-changing isn't too bad.

OK umm i know what you mean tell your mom the dangers of smoking and get your dad to help so her pictures of bad lungs from smoking tell her that you love her and want her to see her grand kids graduate if you decide to have any tell her you want her to see you graduate tell her you don't want to see her died of an unnatural death like lung cancer tell her you love her so much or if shes stubborn try to steal the cigarettes and trow them away and tell her you haven't seen them and if shes smoking in front of you go to a differ room cause your a softball player and every once in a while if you see her smoking try to knock it out of her hand like on purpose like run into her or bump into her so that she drops it i hope this helps.

But what does SHE need... her self-centered needs are just as important as your own? People will only stop if they think it's their idea and forcing them will make them totally unbearable to live with.
To go smoke free you'll almost certainly need to get your own place, in the meantime try to avoid rooms in which people smoke.

You can't!
Since she's the parent, she can choose not to listen to anything you have to say.
My Dad has smoked my entire life and nothing I say can make him even falter.

You might be more likely to convince her to confine it to outside or one room though and not around you.
Try to guilt her and say that it's harming you. (Which it is)

Wow, you sound really selfish. I mean, concern for your mom's health I understand, but . . .

Anyway, you certainly aren't going to get her to stop by being that way.

as soon as she lights up, walk away. You won't be around her disgusting filthy habit and she may start thinking about quitting if she likes to be around you.

Just stay away from the smoke as best as you can. Try hanging your clothes outside on the porch or line it will keep them from smelling like cigarettes. Wash your hair in the morning dry it but keep a towel on till you leave so it won't stink up your hair so bad. Just do what you can for yourself and stay away from her.

You can't make her stop- she has to make that decision on her own if she wants to quit.

Second hand smoke has it's effects, but it won't stop you from your goals unless you have additional health problems on top of inhaling the smoke.

Just practice up on your softball and focus on your grades. These are things you can control, but you cannot control what your mother does.

Good luck in school!

That's a tough one. My Mom never smoked and being a non smoker, you really can smell the smoke on everything. Would it work to sit down with her, with Pops beside you, and tell you how you feel. Without getting angry, you and your Dad could suggest some options on how to quit. Your Dad did it, so "lets make this a smokeless family".Tell her that you'll help her and support her through this. Mention that you are concerned about her health as well as yours! Good luck hun...PiNk

don't be around her when she smokes ... you can't make someone do something they don't want to ... you need to try to look at it from her perspective, maybe she thinks that you playing softball is like you trying to force her to quit ...

Leave your mother alone. She is old enough to make her own decisions. She probably smoked before you were born and you have made it this far, so obviously second-hand smoke hasn't prevented you from playing softball so far. Why would it stop you from playing in college?

You need her to stop? She needs you to GET OFF HER BACK!

What a brat.

Why don't you try *talking* to her instead of acting like you're in a position to make demands?

kk L
Shes not going to stop unless she wants to, sounds like your more worried about yourself then her though

secondhand smoke isnt to bad but ull be able to play in college, its extremely hard to quit smoking, so good luck with that

Achmed the Dead Terrorist
There is only 2 people who can make her stop... Herself and God.

It does no good to tell them if they do not want to.
