Does humidity affect asthma?

No. factors such allergens are primary offenders. Medications containing aspirin and nosteroidal anti inflammatory drugs trigger it.

robert w
From what I understand a very dry climate can help asthma. I know somebody who moved to AZ and now lives in Vegas who has Asthma Things are much better for him in the dry climate.

I Got What U Need
yes, Just a few days ago our weather man warned that it would be a bad day for those that suffer.

steph j
Can do.
Everyone with asthma has different triggers - pollen, cold, virus, dust etc.

You better believe it - check this out:

my friend has asthma, and the humidity sometimes affects her.

yeah, humidity is excess water in the air, excess water being inhaled can affect asthma

gabriela c

i really think it does. when i take a hot steamy shower, i can feel my asthma get worse.

I am good
Yes. It is worse in higher humidity.

Humidity and Asthma

In humid areas - New York in high summer, for instance, or in Toronto - part of the familiar discomfort is caused by the fact that air becomes ion-depleted. Really humid days are murder for anyone suffering from asthma or any respiratory allergy, and the fact that such people find it difficult to breath in hot, humid air may have less to do with the amount of oxygen in the air then with the massive negative ion depletion. Air electricity is quickly conducted to the ground by the moisture in the air, and what negative ions there are attach themselves to particles of moisture and dust and lose their charge. We have seen how positive ions make breathing more difficult and reduce the body's ability to absorb oxygen; and how negative ions help breathing and improve oxygen absorption.

I have severe COPD when the humidity gets above 85%
I have to get the oxygen going

The effect of weather on asthma symptoms isn't fully understood, but there clearly is a link. Some people find that their asthma symptoms get worse in different types of weather noticing that a severe storm or sudden weather change can trigger an attack.

Exposure to cold, dry air is a common asthma trigger and can quickly cause severe symptoms. Hot, humid air can also trigger asthma symptoms in some people. It all depends on the person and what triggers their asthma attacks.

Humidity plays major role is attack when the person is exposed to an environment where the humidity is so high that mold is present. Most time it is not seen and since there is no practical way to eliminate all molds indoors; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control the moisture. Maintaining low indoor humidity, ideally between 30-50% relative humidity can prevent mold growth.

Humidity levels can be measured by hygrometers, which are available at local hardware stores. Picking one up and noting the humidity at the time of attacks can help prevent any future attacks.
