Advair or Albuterol? I'm new to asthma,I have tightness in the chest?
I have never taken the advair but I have it, I take qvar daily.I had read the disclosure for advair and it sounded so extreme! I was scared to take it.Usually I take albuterol when I am sick which I have a cold right now, before i went to an allergist who gave me the advair,Is advair treatment or preventative or both? Which one should i take? This is all so confusing, I need to go see the allergist again,ok thanks

Advair is a preventative. If you are having symptoms at the time, you need to use the albuterol. The Advair is usually used 2 times daily everyday. I use Advair myself and it's great for preventing my asthma problems.

Advair is a preventative, meant to be taken everyday. Albuterol is to be used as needed. Ideally, if you're on a preventative like Advair, you won't need your albuterol as much.

I have never taken Advair. I've been on Singulair for almost 3 years now. It's a pill you take once a day (instead of inhaling like Advair.) It really helps me alot. If I take it regularly, I don't have to use my inhaler very much at all (except during allergy season or if someone is smoking near me.)

James S
Advair is a combination inhaled steroid and long acting bronchodilator. It is supposed to be taken every 12 hours (or however often your doctor wants you to take it). It is a maintenance medication that prevents chest tightness.

I take Advair 500/50 once a day because that's all I can stand (I should be taking it twice a day). Once a day makes my belly get alarmingly larger, but I can deal with it. Twice a day had very bad side effects for me. I would start crying for no reason and I was having much more severe stomach problems. When I see a doctor next week, I will be trying to switch to Symbicort in the hopes that it isn't blessed with as many or as bad side effects. Advair is a life-saver and I would not be alive without it. Just keep in mind that it does have some strange side effects and don't take it for longer than you need to.

Albuterol or Salbutamol (same thing) is short acting bronchodilator that is meant for rescue. I use it too and it works well if I am having an asthma attack, but very poorly for long-term maintenance of my asthma. Salbutamol is normally taken before Advair.

Because Salbutamol starts working in about five minutes, it is your rescuer. NEVER take Advair when you are having an asthma attack. It doesn't work fast enough and you could die if you use it instead of your rescue inhaler.

If you are having an asthma attack around the time you are supposed to take your Advair, take Salbutamol first and wait for the asthma attack to pass, just to be on the safe side.

One of the asthma educators at my hospital (I'm an ICU and ER Respiratory Therapist) told me that Advair is inappropriate for asthma treatment. It is fine for COPD (old smokers) though. Symbicort is better for asthmatics and that's what I'm going to see if I can switch to next week when I see a doctor. Advair is a miserable drug that works great, but has some odd and disruptive side effects. Not taking it could result in my death, so I keep taking it and hoping that Symbicort will work as well with fewer side effects for me to deal with. In addition, Symbicort (in Canada) can be used as a rescue inhaler too, making it very versatile and a powerful tool in our ongoing war against asthma.

Please ask your doctor about your medications. I would also ask about being on Symbicort instead of Advair.

Take both - they are used for different things.

Albuterol is a rescue in haler, used to treat and stop attacks as they are occurring. It fights muscle constriction. The inhaled medicine travels to your lungs and relaxes the muscles around your airways.

Advair is a preventative treatment, usually taken twice daily. It contains steroids that help fight inflammation in your airways.

I use both. Was just recently diagnosed with bronchitis and was told that it was the Advair that had been saving me.

Only take Albuterol when you feel attacks coming on.

Advair is a preventative medicine that you use twice daily... Albuterol is more of a "rescue" medicine when your asthma is flaring up such as with a cold or allergies. Both my son and I are on Advair and have done just fine with it, in fact it seemed to reduce the severity of when he does get sick. Best of luck to you!

Learn the Buteyko method. It takes time and effort. Only worth trying if you are committed and really want to be asthma free.

My son takes both, he takes advair as a preventative, once in the morning, and once before bed. He takes albuterol as needed sometimes before going outside or at the onset of an attack. He was once on 6 different meds per day. Now that they have made advair for him, it is all he takes. I'm not a doctor but just from personal experience advair is the med for him. (it also has a time released steroid, which is what helps to keep his airways open, before he would be on an oral steroid, which was terrible!!) Good Luck and Take Care!

Albuterol is a emergency, fast acting inhaler. It is to be used when you are having diffilulty breathing.

Advair is a maintenance inhaler to be used daily to help prevent attacks.

I stopped taking Advair and now I take Singulair. I would recommend the Singulair.

Good luck!

I have been dealing with asthma since I was three years old, and after many years of using different medications I am now pretty confident in saying that Advair works really well as a daily treatment. It is NOT like Albuterol at all because it does not act quickly and cannot be used to control a surprise asthma attack. I reccommend using both, but use Advair as a daily preventative, and Albuterol as a fast-acting response medication. I have never experienced any side affects due to Advair.

I use just my albuterol (light asthma & pregnant). I've used advair in the past when my asthma was worse, it worked well for me although after a few months, I developed a serious cough, so my doctor had me stop and see if Ihow I would do without it. Since then, I've been fine.

Take the albuterol first wait about five minutes and then take the advair.
