Why am I having random, sharp leg pains at night?
Okay, so last night and one other night I woke up in the middle of the night with this awful leg pain in my calf. It was a really sharp pain, almost unbearable, and I was gasping for air when I woke up. I've heard this could be a sign of type 2 diabetes, which I'm worried about because of my family history. I'm only 16 and I'm not overweight, so I'm thinking it could be something in my back or a calcium deficiency (other things I've heard). Could someone tell me some other possible causes and link me to any medical websites, if possible? Thanks in advance.

Ok, go see a doctor and speak about your pains and be very specific. If you don't have money to see your doctor, than it might be because of the Temperature outside. If you spend a lot of time outside in the cold, at night the warm air shocks the cold air in your legs. If you live at a place that is very warm, than it is probably a cancer disease. I'm sorry to say, but chances are, you have a rare cancer. But its small and all you need to do is walk more, have a work-out, and drink only orange juice, water, ETC. Just not any sugar foods. This helps the legs become more powerful at night and the cancer virus leaves. If it still hurts I would go see a doctor and they either will have to take x-rays because you might have broken a bone. Chance are you haven't. Or surgery. I had a patient that had the same problem and we gave her medincine, I am a doctor. She got healed, but you did say you are 16, which means that its different. She was only 5, unlike you. And maybe its just stress problems. You need to relax more and see what happenes.
Hope I helped!
Love,
Britt Britt

Just drink some milk and you should be fine. This used to happen to me a lot during spring sports season

It could be "shin splints" which is patellar or achilles tendinitis. It is the tearing and consequent inflammation of tendons, which will heal, and occurs often in athletes, people who play sports, or younger people.
You could try some ibuprofen.
It could also be a cramping of your calf while you are asleep. If you exercise a lot and do not replace the nutrients you depleted, you muscles may spasm in your sleep.
As long as you still have good circulation in your feet and are not greatly overweight, it is unlikely diabetes. The peripheral pain and circulation issues experienced by diabetics are usually the result of decreased circulation due to atherosclerosis. This is highly unlikely at your age. You are on the young side for type II diabetes mellitus, and would probably have already been diagnosed with type I by now.
A great medical website is Pubmed. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/

are you on a birth control pill?

if so that may be causing blood clots in your arms and legs. stop taking it immediately, and go see a doctor

Eat a Banana before going to bed.

It could be RLS (restless leg syndrome)

Xx<3horse-_-lover<3Xx
it could just be your leg cramping....

I would say it is growing pains but that sounds severe so probably not. hmm I am not too sure but you should go see a doctor.

well here are som causes of leg pain..

Common causes of cramps include:

Dehydration or low amounts of potassium, sodium, calcium, or magnesium in the blood
Medications such as:
Diuretics, which can cause you to lose too much fluid or minerals
Statins, which lower cholesterol and can cause muscle injury
Muscle fatigue or strain from overuse, too much exercise, or holding a muscle in the same position for a long time
An injury can also cause leg pain from:

A torn or overstretched muscle (strain)
Hairline crack in the bone (stress fracture)
Inflamed tendon (tendinitis)
Shin splints -- pain in the front of your leg related to overuse or repetitive pounding
Other common causes of leg pain include:

Atherosclerosis that blocks blood flow in the arteries (this type of pain, called claudication, is generally felt when exercising or walking and relieved by rest)
Blood clot (deep vein thrombosis) from prolonged bed rest
Infection of the bone (osteomyelitis) or skin and soft tissue (cellulitis)
Inflammation of the leg joints by arthritis or gout
Nerve damage -- common in diabetics, smokers, and alcoholics (symptoms include numbness, tingling, or a sensation of pins-and-needles)
Varicose veins

good luck! :)

It could mean that the muscles in ur legs aren't getting enough oxygen... When u get these cramps the best thing to do is get up and walk around

I know exactly what the problem is!!

AHA!!

I've had this too and I know exactly what you're talking about.
It's leg cramps. This occurs naturally for some, but also due to a lack of potassium.

There's nothing you can do to get rid of 'em either. :/

Just eat bananas I guess?

You could also use this Symptom Checker if you think it's something else:

That is bad something going on ask ur doctor

i have type 1 diabetes actually, that's never happened to me but you can have leg pain because of poor circulation because of it. the way you describe it however doesn't sound like that to me. Ive had charlies horses real bad and the way you describe the pain sounds a lot like a charlie horse and those definitely will wake you up during the night. I think the ones in your calves are the worst, i usually end up crying it hurts so bad. If its not a charlie horse than im not sure.
hope i helped & your leg gets better :):):)

I have had this a lot too. It hurts so bad most people can't even imagine. It is sometimes caused by very hard workouts which lowers the calcium in your muscles and causes cramps in your legs but it could also be a calcium, magnesium, potassium deficiency. Some people are more prone to this than others especially if you are under weight or are a vegetarian you may not be getting the vitamins you need. You should take a vitamin supplement and some calcium. Nature made makes a vitamin that is dye free and has nothing else added to it like gelatin. If you can drink a glass of skim milk at least once a day and maybe a food high in potassium like bananas will also help but there are plenty of others that are high in potassium if you don't like bananas. Good luck and good sleeping!

It could be due to something as simple as your body's need for more calcium/potassium. But it could be a more serious condition such as the on-set of Multiple Sclerosis. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your concerns, and let her/him make the diagnosis. Good health to you!!!

It sounds like a charlie horse. You may need some more potassium. I used to get them all the time when I was pregnant. They were horrible! The dr. said I needed more potassium and it helped! Ask your doctor first before you take any supplements, but this should help. Good luck!
