Constant headache and pain in the neck?
Can anyone help me please. My dad is 82 years old and he has a constant headache and a painful neck all the time but he won't go to the docs. What could it be?

Just old age probably.

I have the same problem it is called Cervical Spondylosis.
not to be confused with Spondylitis. It is wear and tear on the vertebrae at the top of the spine (neck). The GP would probably prescribe Anti-inflammatory tablets. I have just taken one, tell him they work. he does not have to suffer it. Show him this answer. Go to see your GP mate, you will be in and out in minutes and no more pain. Trust me I have been there.
Read all about it here http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068700/

It could be many things.
If you have a headache or ANY kind of pain that last more than 3 days, you should go to the doctor
headach could be:
vision problems
high blood pressure
stroke from the high blood pressure
vasospasms in the brain
Painful neck could be:
Ruptured disc between vertebra
fractured vertebrae
All you can do is tell him you love him and do not want anything to happen to him. Ask him to go to the doctor for you.

I don't have a clue but I have this at the moment :( This makes me wonder if its a virus thing.

i now how he feels i have had a spliting head for 3days i have been in bed have been sick with it i feel allful drained, am back off to the docs tomorrow

Cervical, old age and probably cold atmosphere.
Pl try hot water bath.
If you are in cold country use all warm things, avoid all cold things(being old age).
Massage is good thing, pl try.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.

It is important to get him to go to the Doctors, it may just be down to wear and tear in the joints of his neck causing inflammation and pressure on the nerves running to and from his head, he might have an infection, a virus or worse a tumour.

Do you think he has a temperature, is he eating and drinking well?.

Either way only a through examination will answer the question.

There is no need for your Dad to suffer in silence, he might just need some antibiotics for an infection in his sinuses, an Xray of his neck, some painkillers or anti-inflammitories.

The more mature a person is the more fearful they become of a bad diagnosis. But help earlier rather than later helps to prevent other problems, that may occur as a knock on effect.

82 is a grand age..but our bodies are less able to fight back and repair. He would not be wasting any ones time going to the doctors.

Sit down and talk to him frankly because you want him to be happy and healthy.

Good luck

could be that its wear and tear and a touch of arthritis?which he can get pain controlled by medication or a visit ti the osteopath if it is?best take him to the doctor no one should suffer and he is possibly thinking all sorts of things but the doctor is the only one who can help him poor man he must be in pain and no need to be good luck check his pillow could be it needs changed and needs a better support go for the Dunlow great investment and it may be the trick also how long has he had his mattress?sometimes its because he is getting no support?

you need to put a cool wash cloth on his neckand on his head he does really need to see a doctor it could be a tumor or something interfearing with the nerves in his neck and head
try rubbing it softly if he will let you do you have any vicks if you do put a tiny little bit on his temples and have him lay down it helps some of my patience
good luck with it i hope he will feel better soon headackes are horrible ive had thm as probley everyon get them once in the while but when they are all the time it is trying to tell you sometingis wrong

I agree with Sal it might be the virus thingy, I've had a headache for a week and it's only just gone. but i didn't have a painful neck.
But I think Dad should see the doctor, it could be anything.
Why not ring N.H.S direct and see what they say ?

Stress... Or too much sleep... Either two gives you that kinda synthoms.

It could be meningitis (an infection of the lining around th brain) which can be fatal. Get him to the doctor right away.

Could be something as simple as his pillow or his mattress. I would switch pillows first to see if that helps. Hope this helps.

Whenever pain is constant (meaning it never remits fully...even breifly) there is a possiblity it could be medical or mechanical.

Medical causes to headaches and neck pain can occur because of some type of disease process. This is especially true if it is associated with other unusual symptoms such as dizziness, fever, nausea, vomiting, etc. A physician would be required to make a diagnosis, however.

More commonly though, when headaches are present in conconjunction with neck pain, they are often related to a "mechanical" reason...or neuromusculoskeletal in origin. This is especially true in the absense of the "unusual" symptoms as mentioned above. It is especially even more true if the pain is intermittent, meaning is comes and goes or only occurs with movment.

Mechanically related headaches are often caused in the elderly population whose posture has become very bad...with the head protruded forward infront of the body. This can often result in an anterior cervical disc herniation in the upper cervical spine and a posterior herniation in the lower cervical spine.

Many will argue that disc protrusions cannot happen in the elderly, but this is more recently contested. I recently had a patient (84 years old) like your dad who complained of the same symptoms and also had difficulty swallowing. He happened to have been set up for a video swallow by a speech language pathologist at the time he was seeing me for PT...under the videofloroscopy the reason for his difficulty swallowing was just as I had mentioned...he had such a large upper cervical anterior herniation that it was actually indenting his esophagus.

We treated him in physical therapy according to the principles of mechanical diagnosis and therapy ( http://www.mckenziemdt.org ). Within six visits, his headache and neck pain were gone...and his ability to swallow returned as well.

New onset of headaches or neck pain in the elderly should always be evaluated by a physician. If he requires PT, I'd recommend the site I provided.
