Why can't I sleep?
I have been having problems sleeping for almost a month now. I don't fall sleep untill 4 or 5 in the morning and get up around 9. All day I feel worn out and done. I have tried over the counter medications, and prescription medications and nothing helps. Then for the short time I do sleep I have nightmares that wake me up. Can anyone help me find out the reason why I can't sleep? And does anyone have any other ideas that might work to help me falls asleep at a good hour?
Additional Details
Medications I have tried is tyenol PM, Lunesta, and herbal remedies. My husband is in the military and on deployment for six months..He has already been gone for four..I didn't have problems sleeping until one month ago, so I didn't think that had anything to do with it..Does it?

u might wanna call a doc and see if u have insomnia. it could also be stress. as far as meds go, have u tried tylenole pm's or lunesta. those work really well for me. but if u have and they havent worked go to the pharmacist at any store like walgreens or walmart and ask them what they recommend for ur problem.

Rocket_man
I suggest going to a doctor, not asking losers here.

You need to talk to someone you can be having nightmares for a reason and you should get help for that. and how i fall asleep when i have trouble witch is often is i take benadril and i read a book and it helps out lot

Em
You need to spend more time during the day working out your problems because if not, your mind will worry with it at night and prevent you from sleeping. I would recommend seeing a therapist or psychiatrist to talk about what's bothering you or stressing you.

The nightmares can come from stopping the sleeping drugs.

The fall asleep try all the classic tricks: drink warm milk, don't go to be too early, handle anything in your life which worries you, get physically tired by doing excersies etc. Medication is only usefull for short periods of time, say the first few days after you have lost a loved one.

The are prescriptions that WILL put you to sleep...go to the doctor. Try Temazepam or Flurazepam.

This will take some time, but try to make your daily schedule very strict. Make sure you wake up at the exact same time everyday, and go to bed at the same time every night. Avoid doing non-sleep things in bed, such as using your laptop, doing homework or work from the office. Avoid caffeine and excessive sugar after the afternoon. Try taking warm baths, drinking warm beverages, and reading before going to bed. Absorb as much sunlight as possible during the day to orient your body to normal circadian rhythms, and DO NOT TAKE NAPS.

These are all just little tricks you can combine together, but the nightmares seem to indicate that you might have anxiety problems. Can you think of anything specific that is making you stressed? If so, address this problem, or think of talking to a doctor if the sources of your stress are unknown or too numerous.

Jackie
stress maybe? there are a lot of reasons for getting insomnia and if over the counter medicines dont help you then you should talk to your doctor and get prescribed sleeping pills. ambien is a good one i know of.

Label addict!!~

Find out what is so heavy on your mind that you can't sleep. Get help for it and your problem should be solved. EVERYONE needs help once in a while. It's not going to make you any less of a person.

When did you insomnia start? And are you suffering from any other disorder? Have you suffered any big life changes or traumatic events?

Look, no one here is going to be able to find out your reason for suffering from insomnia. It's your responsibility to find out for yourself. Go see a doctor or psychologist.

There could be any number of factors in why you are not falling asleep. You may have messed up your sleep patterns by staying up late a few nights to watch a movie or talk to friends and it became a habit for your body. If this is the case, force yourself to wake up at 7am and keep yourself busy all day until the evening.

You may be drinking a caffeinated beverage too close to bedtime. Like sweet tea, coke, etc.

You may be taking a new medication that has messed up your regular routine.

Having nightmares while you sleep that wake you up means you are not getting good sleep. You should stop with the sleep medications except if prescribed by a Doctor. Try drinking a glass of milk before going to bed with no other drinks for hours before.

Don't exercise within three hours of going to bed because the routine will increase your metabolism and you will never get adequate rest. You wake times should be more active and you should start to settle down by 6pm

No advice here! i need some! i have NEVER slept well (33 yrs old). I wake up anywhere from 5 to 30 times a night! I actually have opposite effects with sleeping pills, make me jittery. May be a clich'e but have you tried warm milk? Some herbal teas are caffeine free and are supposed to help sleep

*{I'm~your~Girl!}*
try going to bed at the same time even if it means just lying in bed staring at your ceiling... don't watch tv or go on the computer an hour advance to when you plan on going to bed. Try to relax your mind, it could be that you have a busy schedule and are thinking about to many things.... hope this helped!

Are you taking naps during the day? If so, stop it.
I bet I know smoething you haven't tried: melatonin. It's at all the pharmacies, over the counter. Take a 3 mg tablet and chew it up, even though it tastes like chalk. (I've heard there are flavored ones, but I've yet to see them!) Even children are given these, so you'll be fine.
Also, try to get on a regular sleep routine...
About 2 1/2 hours before bedtime: do something energetic, but only for about 30 minutes or so.
About an hour before bed: change something about your nightly routine, but make it relaxing, whether it's drinking a sleepytime tea or reading a short article. No long books!
30 minutes before bed: chew the melatonin. Put a small pad of paper and a pen next to your bed. Make sure you're completely clean getting into bed, from shower to brushing your teeth.
After you climb into bed: if you start to think about something needing to be done or whatever, write it down.
Next morning: Wake up earlier, the same time every single morning, tired or not, weekend or weekday. My doctor told me that sleep cycles are related to waking hours. 9:00 is because you're not sleeping. Don't play into that.

Your nightmares are either side effects of the meds you've tried or a sign of something stressful you haven't yet coped with. If this does not clear it up in about a week, following all I've told you, PLEASE follow up with a doctor. You can't keep going on sleep-deprived. I know that eventually sleep will catch up to you, but you need nice, uninterrupted sleep.
I'm truly sorry you're going through this.
I've had sleep problems for years, but when I follow the above routine, I get much better.
Oh, on the melatonin. Melatonin is naturally produced in your body; your body isn't getting enough.
Good luck. Write me and let me know how things are going.
