Claire.you need something to occupy your mind,my wife who smoked 20+a day,[you may laugh at what she did] found that popping bubble wrap occupied her mind &fingers it proved a very effective method it is now over 4.5 years since she smoked,{she is 76} she had been smoking since she was 14.If she can do It so can you.
Good luck.

First off good on you!!

It's bloody hard, but worth it.
Everytime you want a cigarette, have a wine gum, or something you really enjoy.

Make it a group thing......have friends who also want to quit to form a group to support each other

This is what made me quit smoking. I think it was an advert or something but it said that your mouth looks like a cats bum hole when pulling on a cig. That was enough, just think about that and it kinda puts you off! Seriously though, there are a plethora of reasons to quit and they can be excellent motivation. Hope you succeed.

When you hit the two week mark it is much easier. Drink lots of water and get the Commit Lozenge. The gums and patches never worked for me. It is hard but worth it.

Don't buy cigarettes like me

Just take it one day at a time. Say to yourself in the morning when you get up "I am not going to smoke today" look no further than that and do the same the day after and the day after and so on!
I quit 12 years ago and did it cold turkey, but I am just SO glad that I did.
If you need encouragement, just go and visit your local hospital at the ward which deals with lung cancer and lung diseases, see all those poor souls dying there. That should reinforce your resolve.

Congratulations on quitting. If you're looking for an easy and gentle help to release the cravings, try Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) which is a self-help tapping approach. To see a 2 min 19 second video of EFT helping with cigarette cravings try this link: http://www.emofree.com/a/?2436/web-videos.htm . EFT's great for other aspects of quitting.

nicotine withdrawal

"...Withdrawal symptoms and nicotine

A smoker's nervous system becomes accustomed to functioning with nicotine.

When you stop smoking, the reduced nicotine intake will disturb the balance of the central nervous system, causing withdrawal symptoms.

The most common withdrawal symptoms are:

* cravings for tobacco

* irritation

* anger

* weight gain

* concentration problems

* depression

* headaches

* fatigue

* constipation

* restlessness

* insomnia

* dizziness

* anxiety.

Fortunately, the majority of these symptoms tend to disappear after a few of weeks. Some people may experience cravings, concentration problems and an increased appetite over a longer time period..."

First of all congratulations on deciding to quit. If you can stick it out you will not regret it! I gave up 1 year ago and it was the best thing I ever did. The funny eyesight and lightheadedness is normal as its all part of your body adjusting to nicotine withdrawal. One website that helped me immensely in the first few weeks was quitnet. Google it and join up, its free to join and theres thousands of other people in the same boat as you that you can chat to. Good luck!!

Its normal, stick with it. You are going to go through hell in the enxt few days, litterally. You are going to climb up the wall, tear your hair out, get angry at events you suddenly remember from many years ago. You might shake, get the headaches, get nervous. Suddenly stand up to do something but not know what! Suffer it. It will get better in just a few days.
The hardest part is your first 3 days. Don't give up giving up.
It's a powerful drug and its calling you, beat it.
Well done on your decision.

p.s. Ask again on YA next time you need to, it really does help.

if your doing cold turkey that must be really hard. just remind yourself of the horrible thiings smoking does to you whenever u have the urge. also you could get those smoker pad things that you put on your arm and helps you stop. OR you could have a new addiction. say lifesavers for example. every time you get a craving have some lifesavers and it will be gone. do whatever you want.

btw, good job quitting smoking!! :]

You're pretty normal. If you have access to nicotine patches, get some and USE them. It will help. They're pricey, but they beat the heck out of getting lung cancer!

Good luck - you can do it!!!!

Oh Claire, I feel your pain. Today is the day that I will stop smoking my beloved ciggies. I've tried before but I didn't last long, the cravings sometimes are too much to bare.
Something that did help me once upon a times was to "pretend" like I was smoking. Doing the whole motions and everything, including the inhaling and exhaling. Try it. I wish you soooo much luck. You can do it!

|||ALL TRUE|||
Congrats, I quit 2 and half years ago and can tell you from own experience that it is worth it.
First days are the worst because you are new to it and your habit is still there phychologically. There is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There will be a time when you wake up and not even think about a cigarette and it is not so distant in the future as you may think right now.

Millions have done it and the rewards are worth it. To be smoke free and not slaving for tobacco. We all had to start on day one and know what you feel like right now.

I can promise you looking back when you are free from cravings it won't seem it took that long as you thought.

Lets be truthful about this, because you are finding it hard now and honestly we all did. I found it really hard but I kept saying no to smoking. Prayed to not smoke a cigarette. It has paid off. If every day had felt like the first day I would of never managed after 4 weeks.
Your body and mind will have to relearn to not smoke. Eventually you will build a resistance to craving, first day is new as since yesterday you were a smoker and getting the nicotine. Just do it one day at a time. Then look back on your achievements you will be amazed what you can do. Just think by the time Spring comes you will of reached a point when just as you are going to bed you suddenly realise that you hadn't thought about a cigarette the whole friggin day day, you will of forgotten all about smoking. Great feeling of achievement !!

That is normal, stick it out!! The symptoms show you just how badly evil nicotine gripped you and now it is like exorcising a demon. Do not give up and well done to you!

Its not uncommon to feel dizzy, lightheaded, crabby, other cravings, your body will do anything to trick you into smoking.
