If a doctor has retired should he really be giving out advice on YA, given how quickly medicine changes?

BAD A55 MACHINE
Yeah, It's funny. People drilling holes in their head to release the devil.

vambo number five
Does it really matter?

cockle
You actually follow advice given on YA?

Why not? we come on here looking for advice in health, money, jobs, relationships, police issues , I am not a doctor, banker, lawyer or marriage guidance councillor but I hope I have help some people with my advice. If you asked a question on here regarding a pain in you head etc and 1000 people told you that you were dying of some disease but a retired doctor answered you by telling you that from his past history he didn't think it was ....but could be .... who would you rather believe?

The internet will keep him informed of the changes. Plus remember the medical profession is an old boys network.

Although Medicine changes all of the time, it's a case of once a Doctor always a Doctor and even though retired, he probably still reads up about the changes.

Hello
well he probably has a better idea than some of the people who answer that have never been in medicine. How long ago did the Doctor retire?

Julia
YES Bear in mind that he isn't able to prescribe anything anyway. The changes in things like GP practise are most likely to be with the development of newer drugs which do the same thing (with less side effect than the older one).

Lots of people give their opinions to questions on here with NO scrap of any professional training or real knowledge about the matter at hand.

How disease work and attach the body isn't EVER going to change is it? The human body is the human body after all.. its been the same for billions of years!

Things like keyhole surgery and a lot of neuro stuff is "fast" moving and changes with the progress of new techniques etc. But basic health care, medicine doesn't change in how its diagnosed. The changes are more pharmaceutical.

And lets not forget, advice is offered, no one has to take it, follow it or do what someone suggests.

petr b
He / she can only recommend, not prescribe.

So what is your problem with it?

Free advice is worth what you pay for it, anyway.

Although if an expert gives you free advice, you might want to give that advice some serious consideration.

medicine might change fast where you come from but sure doesnt in the UK, there's plenty of people given stupid answers on here to things they know nothing about, i'd certainly take the advice of a professional retired or not over these people.

probablygraham
Using this place as a forum for getting ideas is quite sensible, but anyone who is relying on yahoo answers rather than going to see their GP for a diagnosis is at best optimistic and possibly quite naive.

Why on earth should a retired doctor's opinion not be respected? What you do with that opinion is your own affair.

Truth Seeker
I would definitely listen to a retired doctor before I would a young one who has probably crammed all his studies in and had not much hands on experience. Most doctors are in with the pharmacy companies to promote medications that they don't have any idea about. I find most doctors need to have pharmacy training.
