Should I wear glasses all the time? I'm short sighted.?
I am short sighted and have been told that I need to wear glasses or it's only going to get worse. However, one optometrist that I went to said to wear them all the time and another said no to because it will make my eyes weak and lazy.

Does anyone know about this?? I've never worn glasses before!!

The Pro
yes, if you don't wear your glasses all the time your eyesight will get worse day by day.

What the "heck" is long and short-sighted? I've always heard it called far-sighted and near-sighted!

Go to a specialist in the field, corrective surgery takes about 15 minutes, than you would not have to worry about glasses or contacts.

With the advancement of lasik technology and much lower cost these days i would recommend doing a lasik .. very simple surgery to correct your eye disorder.

you should wear them everyday this will help you improve on your sight and if god wills you wont have to wear glasses at all in the future.

only wear them when you need them. i have the same problem and i don't wear them when i don't need them.

If you're near sighted, you probably don't need your glasses to read. Depending on how bad your nearsightedness is (and how bad your uncorrected vision is), you may want to wear your glasses for certain distance activities (e.g. most states require that you see at least 20/40 or 20/50 to drive).

You will need them to stop bumping into things. You shouldn't need to wear them for reading though, which will give you a chance to exercise them.

depends on the strength of the myopia. can't really say more but minus prescriptions tend not to make your eyes lazy and you'll know yourself when you need to wear them because you won't be able to see. Are you sure you are not long sighted or presbyopic? There is however a condtion when your a child called juvenile stress myopia where some opticans worry about the rising increase in prescription but there is little that is proven to help that anyway.

You should wear them all the time...

don't wear them all the time. just wear them when you really have to.

gary s
Wear them all the time and practice focusing from near to far and far to near, that will exercise your eyes. You don't know when you'll need them.

It depends on what is your power. Usually if you have power like -1 or -0.75 etc., you can simply ignore glasses. Still some optometrists say, if you have myopia, it is better you wear glasses and if you don't your eyesight'll become still worse. In my case, I initially at the age of 10 when I first went to test for glasses, I had -1.5(sum of cylindrical and spherical) But since I was shy wearing glasses because, my friends'll take me for a ride etc., I didn't wear. In fact when I re-tested in my age of 15, no change was noticeable. One of my friend who had power like -0.75 dioptres, simply got rid of wearing glasses when he went to states for higher studies and he isn't wearing till now. In this case you observe that, wearing glasses does not really help. Whereas in my case, it helped because I get better vision like following the bus number etc.. Thus you are the best judge to decide whether to wear glasses. Now a days, women wear glasses and they still look as beautiful as without glasses because, the opticians have got the best fitting frames for a particular face. Similarly men look wiser with glasses! On the other hand you see the laser technology can even cure the short-sight problem. My advice would be to judge yourself based on the information you receive and that works fine in the case of glasses.

Im short sighted and got my first glasses when I was 10. I didnt wear them for about 3 or 4 years and my eyes got a lot worse in that time so if I were you, I would wear them.

Big momma
Hi,all 3 of my daughters were told they needed glasses for short sightedness, the two girls wore them, but my eldest very rarely put hers on and now 10years later still doesn't need to wear any.My other two girls however still do.My middle girl eyes actually became worse with glasses and she had laser eye surgery done 4years ago and has never looked back.I too at the age of 56 had laser eye surgery 4weeks ago and for the first time in my life i can see long distance. So in reply to your question i think yes glasses do make your eyes lazy so if you don't need to wear them all the time DON'T!!! Good luck.

every waking hour

Hi Kay, If you find that you are squinting then wear your glasses because the straining on your eyes may give you a headache.the most important thing is that you are able to see so that is my advice.I've worn glasses since I was seven,I'm thirty seven now,I used to work in an opticians.

It all depends on how bad the vision problem is. I am near sighted and I only have to wear my glasses if I read, go to the movies or drive at night. But wearing them gives you 20/20 vision and that is why they are called corrective lenses.

I would find another optometrist to go to if I were you. If your eyes are bad and not wearing them will make your vision worse in some cases.

I am near sighted and I only wear glasses when I can't see. When I read or do homework or do something that requires near vision, I don't wear my glasses. Get 3rd, 4th, 5th opinions, not only from doctor's but from people with the same vision as you.
