Do your eyes get worse if you wear glasses when you don't really need them?
I have a bet with my teenager who thinks glasses are cool and wants to wear them in spite of his 20/20 vision. Do your eyes somehow get weaker because they grow accustomed to the magnification the glasses offer?

Matt M
yes they will.

yes they do

Your %100 right

yup, you'll end up needing them.

yes they do
dont wear glasses
if you can see without the,

Lynn P

They do. I started wearing glasses in third grade, and I was only supposed to wear them to see the board. I wore them all the time because I thought they were cute, and now I'm pretty much blind without them. Your eyes basically get used to having glasses if you always wear them, so then you actually need them to see.

Yes it´s bad for you ´cause it forces your eyes. Get some glasses without any diops with some pleasant frames wich will do no harm at all.

Pink Hippo
I know you become reliant on the glasses. This means what you see when wearing glasses becomes the normal so when you take them off everything looks fuzzy or blurry so it seems like you should wear your glasses to make it better. This gives the impression that your eyes may be getting weaker but it's more of a reliance on them. That's what my optometrist told me but as for wearing glasses with magnification when you don't need them is not a good idea, you can buy fashion frames with clear lenses for this purpose.

Yes, in fact a scientist, who I can't recall the name of, did an experiment on the brain where he had volunteers wear glasses which utilized mirrors to flip everything they saw upside down. Within 5 days all the volunteers brains converted the image to right side up. Your brain will adjust your eyes to create the clearest image. Thus your eyes will become weaker in order to compensate for the magnification of the glasses. They do sell glasses without a prescription if you think you want to wear glasses for fashion reasons.

Yes, it's bad for your eyes.

yes its 100% true...if he wants glasses he should get ones that don't have a prescription in them- it will be like looking out of plain glass and don't make yours eye worse.

Michelle T
Not likely. If he wore glasses with magnification (correction for farsightedness), like those available at the drug-store, it would be like he's nearsighted when he wore them (things in the distance would be blurry). And if he'd try to see them clearly, he'd get eye-strain, and things would become uncomfortable long before any remotely possible permanent change could occur.

If he wore glasses with the opposite correction (for nearsightedness/myopia), which he couldn't get without a prescription anyway, there is such a thing as "Induced Myopia" - which has been shown to happen by putting lenses in front of chimps for a long period of time. But, as in the previous case, lenses like these would make him farsighted while he wore them (things up close would be fuzzy, and he would get bad eyestrain trying to compensate), which would most likely cause him to stop wearing them long before any Induced Myopia could occur.

All that being said, I know someone who claims that, as a kid, he wanted to wear glasses, so he wore a pair he found frequently, for long periods of time, for more than a year (despite the headaches), and he did become nearsighted and have to wear glasses (he still is and does).

P.S., I agree with your son that glasses are cool (though it took me a long time to come to that conclusion) - on the other hand, I had a friend (co-worker actually) who admired my frames, so I told her to go and get some without a prescription lenses, and while she was there she had her vision screened, then a full eye exam, and then glasses with prescription lenses to correct her nearsightedness, which she didn't know she had...maybe something like this will happen to your son, in which case, he may decide the HAVING to wear glasses isn't quite so cool.

Katie H
Yes they do. However, since some people are like your son they have made cosmetic glasses that have no magnification at all. Find him a pair of those and it won't damage his eyes. Why any one who didn't need glasses would want them is beyond me. I've worn them since 4th grade and would like to get rid of them but can't afford contacts.

Wearing glasses when you don't need them will negatively affect perfect vision over time.

Your eye will try to compensate for the prescription, no matter how mild, of the glasses you choose to wear. Eventually, you'll need to wear glasses to compensate for the compensation of your perfect vision.

That being said, I do believe that you can request "prescriptionless" glasses.

IEverybody else is wrong.

I don't see how looking through glass could make a person's eyes weaker.

yes they do they rely on them and soon they glasses start to be his/her real source of vision

Yes, actually you can become blind from wearing glasses that were not perscribed to you by a profeshional eye doctor.

Your teenager's eyes will NOT become weaker if s/he wears a glasses prescription that is not correct for him or her. The only time wearing the wrong Rx would hurt one's vision is before age 7 when the visual system is not yet mature. If a child under age 7 wore the wrong Rx they would be at risk of developing amblyopia - an eye condition in which the eyes don't connect fully with the brain. Other than that, the only risk is blurry vision, visual discomfort or headaches which would resolve when removing the glasses with the wrong Rx.You can order glasses with no prescription (plano lenses).

Gypsy Girl
Yes they do. They have contacts for people who only want to color their eyes and have no visual deficiencies. I see no reason why they would not be able to provide glasses with no correction for aesthetic reasons. It might be a bit expensive though. My last pair of glasses was about $500 and less than $100 of that was for the lenses.

Yes they do. If someone with 20/20 vision want to wear glasses, they should just wear lenses with no prescription in them.

Veggie Maniac, RN
My ophthalmologist told me that eyes do *not* adapt to glasses in such a way as to weaken vision. There is no evidence showing that they do, it's all anecdotal - from people whose vision would have deteriorated without glasses just the same.

Now, if he wears prescription glasses that he doesn't need, he could give himself eye strain, headaches, etc, and of course it could also present a risk of injury if his perception is altered enough. He won't do any permanent damage to his eyesight, though.

You can get glasses with 0.00 lenses. Cosmetic only, no vision adjustment. If he wants glasses so badly, he can get some without a prescription at any place he chooses.

(I know I'm the only person who's going to say "no" lol - but this is what I was told by a professional)
