I'm using a crutch for a broken knee On an escalator, which leg should go first at the top and bottom?
My left leg is in a zimmer splint and cannot bend. I'm at the point where I can get by on one crutch or even a cane. I know how to handle stairs but am not sure about what is the safest way to get on and off an escalator. Should the good or the bad leg go first? Hope for an answer by Monday July 3. Thanks.

All The "Right" Steph

Since your left leg would be the culprit. I would have to say; your right foot. Try balancing and practicing. Hopefully your not traveling alone. But, if all else fails, ask for assistance!!

Patience too ~ Practice makes perfect

use your good leg so your bad one can follow

Good leg first. Is this how you tackle the stairs? If it is then it would be the same with an escalator. Hope you mend quickly.

Always step into something with your strongest leg so you have full strength to step back if you need to. Step off thrusting with your splinted leg so you have your good leg to catch/support you as you transition the surfaces.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. (Hint: Push the therapy - make them really challenge you)

Good leg, better yet, use the elevator

Escalator can slip you down, if you do not have balance. Certainly someone with an orthopedic problem should always watch out and avoid stepping onto any moving surfaces .
Unless the ground under your feet is firm, you cannot balance your body like other normal persons.
In fact balancing will be difficult in water too. Rivers, swimming pools or any watery surfaces will slip you. Be very careful but keep going.

Just fall down. The escalator will carry you to the top and push you off automatically.

If you absolutely have to use an escalator, step on with your good foot, and hold onto the escalator handrail with a firm grip.

If an elevator is an option, it is the wiser, safer one. Crutches and bum legs make escalator use a pretty tricky thing.

Most escalators are fairly flat at the top and bottom. The good foot should go on first followed by the crutches. Getting off the escalator, the crutches should go first. I went through a similar experience a few years ago and found the above method worked best for me.

you move first with your good leg, the crutch is to help support your weak leg.

Can't get enough volleyball!

The good leg should go first on and off the escalader. good luck:0)
