do I have to go to the doctor for swine flu?
So as it turns out I was in Mexico City for nearly a week over easter (returned April 14th). My last day there I got sick - with what I will euphemistically refer to as "stomach flu". I took lots of pepto bismol which masked the most pressing issue but didn't entirely deal with the insane fatigue.

After 8 days of being sick I finally went to the doctor. My "stomach flu" wouldn't go away and it became clear that something else needed to be done. I explained that I went to Mexico and my symptoms. I was put on Cipro. It has appeared to cure the stomach flu issue but I'm still dealing with the exhaustion issue and now I've developed a sore throat and body aches. But I don't ever recall having a fever or notable respiratory issues.

I figure I've been gone from Mexico for too long (2 weeks as of yesterday) to have swine flu but frankly being sick like this after my trip kind of freaks me out.

FYI - I did call my doctor's office 2 days ago and the nurse practitioner still doesn't think I have Swine Flu. I don't want to seem like a giant hypochondriac so I don't want to call again unless y'all think I should keep pressing this matter.

Bottom line - should I just trust the doctor and chalk this up to coincidence?

No the doctors needles overdose you to the point that you will die

Its Me
Go to the doctor and asked to be tested for swine flu, its better to be safe than sorry.

Brittany S
If you are still sick, I would definitely go back to the doctor.
Even if it isn't swine flu, the doctor may be able to prescribe something else to make you feel better.

Your doctors are professionals. Trust what they say.

If you get worse go back, if not just rest and get better :)

Me Fang You
in canada, the news is saying NOT to go to the e.r.
but to call your doctor. i would call again. u cant be too concerned with your heath in this world.

Peatea
I would believe the doctor and say it's just a coincidence, however, if you don't start feeling complete relief in a couple of days I would go back to the doctor to be tested for other possibilities such as mono (because you said you're exhausted with a sore throat and body aches), this could just be the usual influenza though so give it a few days.

SeeksAnsrs_78
There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion from another doctor. Look up the symptoms online and perhaps call a telehealth nurse. It sounds like you'll recover well; however, if you do have the swine flu, they need to know so that anyone you've had contact with can be checked out as well. I can completely understand where you're coming from. I don't think it's crazy to be overly concerned right now.

jami
I hear ya... I came home on the 21st and this past weekend became very exhausted. My throat KILLS and now my ears. I am achy..... but I haven't had a fever.

I think if you were tested you are ok... they are looking for Type A influenza.

I understand your worries - the media doesn't help it, especially being in Mexico with all this breaks out.

I hope you feel better soon.

I had been ill for one and a half months with what appeard to me to be a kidney or UTI infection. I finally went to the VA hospital which was 2 hours away, the pain had gotten so bad. I spent 12 hours in the emergency room and they found nothing, even with a scan of my stomach. They gave me a few pain pills and said they could find nothing. The pain continued worse, till yesterday I went to a local Urgent Care clinic and they found and Urinary Tract Infection, blood in urine, dehydrated, etc. I was given Cipro and told to drink lots of water and cranberry juice. Don't take no for an answer when you know something is wrong with your body. Swine flu or not, I don't know-- all I know is you can't trust anyone but God.

yeahyeahyeah
Just call and make an appointment saying you're sick. Don't mention Swine Flu until your doctor asks you.

Friedrich Wilhelm
Your blood should be tested on H1N1 type swine flu.

Well, your actually the first person on Y!A that might just have a valid reason to be worried. I say keep pressing the matter, it's better to be sure. If you don't trust your test results, get a second opinion and a second blood test/blood culture. All the best.

Go to the ER, because it's better to be safe than sorry, and then sue your stupid doctor, if he was wrong, for not taking this more serious!

King Soji
No, Its too early to tell but at the moment we do know that the World Health Organisation considers the world to be closer to a flu pandemic than any time since 1968

Not everyone is dying who contracts H1N1, but its unusual that this time round it is affecting younger rather than older people who are typically weaker and more suscebtible to infection. Also we have access to better antivirals than we did in 1976.
of course even though this is not yet finished so we can not know until the end but they have been saying that it will be bigger than ever...

It is better to be safe than sorry !
You probably will be fine.. but if it was me.. I would keep asking.
Millions of people ask & ask, even if its minor.
So you just need to keep your head up and make sure you are definitely okay!

- Hope I helped

go to the doctor you dont want to tale any chances

Jack
Second Option. Go to the Doctors. I had the Stomach Flu to. But mine went away in 3days lmao.

Chez
I think if you are at all concerned to go to your doctor and get yourself checked out, because not every one gets all symptopms, and even if it is just to put yourself at ease, then i think you should do it.
And if you dont want to go to your normal doc then you can ask for a differant doctor.

Bob Newhart
You can still get sick for other reasons. Did they take any samples? If you're worried, ask them to test it.

go to a different doctor
2 weeks of illness is kinda weird

hope ur ok

Whether the receptionist thinks that you have swine flu or not doesn't matter. If you're worried about it, you have the right to be tested for it. But don't just show up, because if you do have the swine flu, infecting other people would not be nice, so call first and make an appointment to get tested. There's no need to be so concerned when you could just clear it up.

Symptoms of swine flu are like regular flu symptoms and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Those symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions, and that means that you and your doctor can't know, just based on your symptoms.

Bottom line is It takes a lab test to tell whether it's swine flu or some other condition.

The Swine Flu includes a fever. No fever, probably no Swine Flu. Your exhaustion and body aches are pretty typical after effects of the stomach flu. Keep an eye on your temperature, really push the liquids, and give yourself time to heal. If you're not seeing significant improvement in the next 24 hours, go back in to the doctor. After all, you don't need to have the Swine Flu to need a follow up appointment. ; ) If they haven't done it already, make them take a stool sample when you go in, in case you have contracted something like campylobacter.

The Swine Flu news is making people panicky. It is serious, but it is better to get info from sources that don't profit off of the advertising dollars that fear mongering generates.

This is the link to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) Swine Flu website.

The podcast you can listen to about it through the CDC site is also pretty good:
