Is the swine flu actually serious?
No one seems that worried about it... just think it'll blow over like bird flu did. But now it's come to the UK I do feel kinda worried. Should I be? And what should I do to prepare?

Brookewilson
it is VERY serious... people have died. Look at how many people are writing about it on yahoo answers alone.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

it is but it isnt. u should be a little precautious tho

I live in California....one of the emergency states.....and I'm not dead or sick. Just be clean.

Sunshine
Well it's already in the USA were I am. But they said it wasnt that that bad.

Eddie
Actually. You should definitely be weary of it. It doesn't have a full cure and usually leads to death. It will probably blow over just like the bird flu, though things happen. Try not to be in any really congested areas where someone might cough in your eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds. The Swine Flu is something I would definitely take a few extra precautions against. Just something minor like Air-Born might help prevent from getting any flu or cold in the first place.

Not worried but not ignoring the situation either. Good medical care in the UK and US make it less likely to be as terrible as what's going on elsewhere. And for goodness sake, send sick employees HOME and to the Dr.!

John Cipolletti
If you need some kind of guide line. If people in the US or Europe start dieing (no one has died yet), in numbers of hundreds then be careful. And don't go to Mexico for awhile.

It's not. The only people who have died were in mexico and that's because they tried to cure it with home remedies. I know plenty of people who have had it and are up and about now. My brother just had it but he's fine. None of the US or Uk people who had it died, just the ones in mexico. Don't worry about it. If you do get it, don't freak. You'll prob just get some meds and rest for a week. You will be better in no time.

I don't think it is that serious.I think the media is blowing it out of portion. Many people are just dying in Mexico because they don't have good health care.

Just wash your hands often, bring hand sanitizer with you.Try not to touch your face)eyes, mouth, nose). And try to avoid sick people.

Brandon P
Yes. If the dang flu evolves again, we could get something as serious as the Black Death. In a modern day and age, I'd isolate myself from all society if it came to that, but that's off subject. I say yes. Be worried. Do everything you can. Wash your hands often, especially after contact with other people. Don't touch something someone coughed on, and don't share anything you will put near your face/mouth.

ya man were already in an economic crisis who wants to get sick and have to pay for that medical bill. plus its killing people eventually i think it'll blow over but not like in a week. Wash ur hands and leave sick people alone

Sophia
I'm thinking it's like the bird flu. People who have gotten sick in the US haven't been that serious. I think it's just lack of health care in Mexico that is making people die out there.

Swine flu shouldn't worry you any more than regular flu, and you can prepare the same way as you normally would for any type of flu.

The swine flu is just that, a flu caused by a virus. Do what you would usually do during flu season. This means wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough, keep personal hygiene up, get plenty of sleep, etc. etc. If symptoms become particularly violent or last longer than 5-7 days, then consult a physician.

News articles state that this is a fairly new and interesting virus, simply because it has an inter-species transfer between humans/pigs/birds, and now it is also able to transfer from human to human.

Treat it as you would the regular flu.

Common Myth About the Swine Flu: Eating pork will increase your chance to get the virus.

This is FALSE. As long as you cook your pork products thoroughly (as usual) they are safe to eat, and that is just general cooking practice and has nothing to do with the flu.

sleakitweasel1
The real pandemic is the feeding frenzy of 24/7 news reporting and the need to continually keep the engine of the media fed with over-fevered slops.
Remember the dire predictions about AIDS?
The grave warnings about global catastrophe that accompanied the 'bird-flu' threat?
Conficker and the implosion of the internet?

Ah, yes and the 'credit crunch' <<groan>>

All grist to the mill of the people who should really fall victim to some awful 'event': politicians and media editors.

Do we really need 'interesting times' to really feel as if we live?

:-)

cyberstarlette
Well...it is similar to the bird flu. Sit tight and wait for official word on it before getting too worked up about it.

To prepare you could get a good dust mask and some Tamiflu. Take care of yourself. If someone around you has flu-like symptoms you should proceed with caution (esp. if that person/or someone they know has been to Mexico). Worrying about it only makes it worse though. It's a totally beatable thing.

nell
yes there are 2 reported cases in the uk, and there isnt a cure as yet

Okay, it's okay to be worried or scared as long as you just don't panic. Be careful and be aware of the latest news, wash your hands and you'll be fine. But yes, it is serious.

Rachel
Well, the thing is that you can't die from it if you go to the doctors when you notice symptoms. You only could die if you left it alone. So some may say it is serious, and some may say its not.

David Davidson III
very much so

Of course it's serious.
Even if it's another "media scam" the numbers do not lie.

better safe than sorry, do not touch your eyes nose mouth, and wash your hands often.

Hammster
hey, people in USA should be more worried, cause mexicos right below it

NickJ_luver
yes, this is serious but not at an extend where we all can die.
anyone can get it.
use hand sanitizer regularly and watch your hands often.
don't share drinks with anyone and stay away from those who are sick.

I think its serious. I'm not losing sleep over it but I am worried.
The best things you could do is wash hands frequently, stay away from crowds till it blows over. Eat healthy, lots of fluids and rest and just maintain your health.
