There should be no harm if you're doing it right - don't hurt yourself, or tear anything, or use any objects that could be potentially harmful (so toys used only for their intended purpose and cleaned properly). I think the basic idea is "if it hurts, stop" but otherwise you won't have any negative health effects.
The interval depends on the person in question. It's not a problem as long as it's not impeding your life in any way (like a compulsion that forces you to abandon other things and people in your life in favor of it, but otherwise you should be okay). Some people do it every day and others less often.
