You have got Stage 3 Hypertension.
Stage-1 (SBP) 140-159 (DBP) 90-99.
Stage-2 (SBP) 160-179 (DBP) 100-109.
Stage-3 (SBP)>/= 180 (DBP) >110/=110
Emergency (SBP) >220 (DBP) >125.
SBP-Systolic Blood Pressure.
DBP-Diastolic Blood Pressure.
Get admission to the hospital on an emergency basis.

Mr. Sonny
No, normal is 120/80--see your dr.

micksmixxx
No. It's high. You should really be speaking with your doctor ... who may, or may not, decide that you require medication.

If this is an average reading, then it is too high and is indicative for hypertension lowering drug therapy. Do bear in mind that single BP readings should never be considered diagnostic. For a more accurate result, BP should be measured over a 24 hour period. 160/125 is in the treatment range. Normal BP is <120/80.

You need to see your Doctor, he will need to rule out secondary causes for hypertension and discuss management with you. In the meantime, you need to think about making some life style changes. Reduce salt intake, try and stay as close to your ideal weight as possible and exercise regularly.

Though BP does have a tendency to rise with age, normal blood pressure in adults is not age dependant and remains constant at 120/80.

Single BP readings are notoriously unreliable and before making management decisions BP is either monitored for up to 6 months or a 24 hour monitor is used to determine if there is a real problem.

160/125 is well into the treatment range so your GP should be arranging monitoring. He will exclude the 2 rare causes of hypertension, renal artery stenosis and pheochromocytoma. I searched in vain for 25 years and never found a patient with either.

The remainder of patients with hypertension have no identifiable cause, weight loss, salt restriction and exercise all help in reduction, but medication might well be needed if that sort of reading proves to be your mean.
