My 15 year old son has 198/115 blood pressure, he is 5'9" and 140 lbs. Could this be hereditary?
My son was diagnosed with high blood pressure. His dad had high blood pressure and his grandfather died of a stroke at 33. His blood pressure was 198/115. His doctor put him on lisconipren. Is this drug harmful? Did he get this from his dad or grandfather? He eats good and exercises regularly.

Definately sounds hereditary. I wonder what his cholesterol level is? Irregardless, he needs to stay on top of this condition at his age and with his family history. He needs a full physical with blood work from his pediatrician immediately.

well the drug shouldn't be armful if it was perscribed by a good doctor. but you never know.
well if he eats good and excercises then he obviously didn't bring this upon himself. but it could be stress related or genetic. chances are that the fact that you and your father had it didn't help his case. but i'm no doctor. his blood pressure is really high for a fifteen year old. just make sure he's going to a good hospital and seeing a good doctor.

Yes it can be passed down the gene pool for hi blood pressure...
That is uncommon at that age if he is not Obese or Using Drugs?

Meth / Crack/ Speed can cause High Blood pressure and Can cause Death! No smoking and NO Caffeine!

If your 15 year old is not doing drugs I would make sure you have a good Cardiologist. I also recommend a home Blood Pressure Monitor.A good one! keep track of it and take it at different times a day and night , standing, sitting, and laying down.write them down and the time and position.
Should rest at least 15 before taking pressure.

Is he under lots of stress from school or home?? I suggest Acupuncture, Yoga and other forms of relaxing.

I think ZESTRAL is the best for High Blood pressure for it makes the heart STRONGER and lowers the pressure with little or no side effects.

Hai Kathy,
As you have mentioned high blood pressure can be inherited from the parents. However, there are other reasons too you need to consider.
Normally, a high blood pressure in children is caused by the secondary effects of kidney, heart and adrenal gland problems. Once, identified, treating the basic cause will help to bring the pressures under control. Even certain drugs can cause high blood pressure.
High blood pressure occurs among children even without a cause. These are described as Essential hypertension. The reason for this is still obscure.
So, it is better get checked for heart, kidney and adrenal gland problems prior going for an option.
Mean while, try to reduce sodium intake, increase veg contents of your son and reduce snacking. Reducing weight by physical activities are also useful.
Hope, this helps.

Eat less animal fat such as cheese, eggs and meat.

There are so many drugs that can control your blood pressure. Sometimes the dr will put something to monitor your pressure for 24 hours. This is extremely high and i would certainly have him checked often. I bought a blood pressure machine so I can monitor my pressure daily.

It sounds like a genetic tendency to high blood pressure... Good thing it has been diagnosed early

Are you sure on the spelling of the med? It doesn't come up in a google search.

198 are you sure. That is extremely high. It probably is hereditary. The medications is not harmful, but it does make you pee alot

He needs to cut down on sodium in his diet-- I hope the doctor discussed this with you. Fast food contains a lot of sodium (salt) and could really raise blood pressure. Are you sure about that drug name? are you sure it's not lisinopril?

The fact that he is young, in good shape and it is in the family sure makes it sounds like it is hereditary. Did the say it is familial hypercholesterolimia? or mention any other family condition?

I don't know what lisconipren is. You must mean lisinopril. It is a class of drugs called ACE inhibitors. They are very effective drugs without a lot of side effects.

Make sure you talk to a cardiologist who is experienced with treating someone your son's age with this condition.

i don't think it is hereditary some many think can cause a high blood pressure like diabetes, heart disease e.t.c. As for the drugs so far it was the doctor that prescribe nothing to worry

Yes this could be hereditary. My grandfather has high blood pressure, so does my dad, and I also have it. Good exercise - 1 hour straight per day, and fish oil pills, and ceyenne pepper works well - you can buy these at a vitamin store.
