My Goodness ! Karen! - at last, someone who has a bit of common sense! and on Answers too!
Welcome to the small select band, Karen !! There aren't many of you around.
Have a free "michrobial banana" (whatever that is !) on me.
(Sorree! "Bannana" ... I stand corrected)
As to the "What goes up, must come down" pearl of wisdom, could someone tell me which Physics textbook that quote comes from please? Perhaps it's "The New La- La Land of Physics "?
If only the Answerers could substitute "typical" for 'normal', and "average" for 'ideal', then it would be a small step for medical students, trainee nurses, and para-medics, but one giant step in the understanding of how it all works... (to coin a phrase)

Edit: For a User with one Question and one Answer to her profile, Elizabeth, that is a most curious and prodigiously sophisticated (if totally incorrect) posting, and where I come from, we used to say "it takes one, to know one"...

That is above normal for blood pressure but not yet considered high. If she does not do something about it and let's it go then it can get high and she can have health risks.

Complications of High Blood Pressure

When blood pressure stays high over time, it can damage the body. HBP can cause:

The heart to get larger or weaker, which may lead to heart failure. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood throughout the body.

Aneurysms (AN-u-risms) to form in blood vessels. An aneurysm is an abnormal bulge or "ballooning" in the wall of an artery. Common spots for aneurysms are the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the body; the arteries in the brain, legs, and intestines; and the artery leading to the spleen.

Blood vessels in the kidney to narrow. This may cause kidney failure.

Arteries throughout the body to narrow in some places, which limits blood flow (especially to the heart, brain, kidneys, and legs). This can cause a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, or amputation of part of the leg.

Blood vessels in the eyes to burst or bleed. This may lead to vision changes or blindness.

Healthy habits can help you control HBP.

Healthy habits include:

Following a healthy eating plan
Doing enough physical activity
Maintaining a healthy weight
Quitting smoking
Managing your stress and learning to cope with stress

How old is she? it's normally 100 plus your age i'e mine would be 129/87 eat less salt and fatty foods. drink plenty of water.

One reading is pretty useless for diagnosing even mild hypertension. If she follows the no smoking, no added salt, no added sugar rule, takes exercise and is not overweight she will be fine.

I have given you a star for asking a question that has brought out all that is most enjoyable in Yahoo!/answers.

The normal BP for her age is 120/80.. according to the classification of Hypertension (High blood pressure) she's at the pre hypertension stage.. right now there's not that much to be alarmed about.. if her BP persists or increase, then you've got to get her checked out..

As a precaution, she should minimize the intake of fatty foods (fast food, animal fat like bacon and chicken skin) and yes, exercise helps..

*i think it's sweet you think of your girlfriend this much.. =D

Its not to high but needs regulating.....Cut out salt completely. and you will find that it will level out just fine in a week or two, also tell her to get her "pill" tests done reg with the doc, don't worry, all's well. god bless.

i have just had that - she needs to eat less salt as this can really cause it and change the pill she has. it could also be caused by stress. x

Hi i found a web site that can help you girlfriend on reducing her high blood pressure

a) Not really
b) Yes

Dr Frank
A one off reading of 128/87 is not of concern and even if it were found to be the same after repeated checks or a 24 hour BP monitor, it is probably still below the threshold that doctors would chose to treat in a non-diabetic patient.

If there is convincing evidence that this slightly elevated reading is correct then making sure she is the ideal weight, taking regular vigorous exercise and reducing salt intake are the 3 non-pharmacological actions that may help reduce it.

Edit Mrs Doubtfire what on earth were you trying to say in your answer? 12 lines of it and I could make no sense of it al all!

A clean michrobial free bannana wuld lower it yet so would a brisk healthy jogging trip.T'is in the laws of Phisic's college edition book's.what Go es up must come back down.thus we must raise our blood presure first cleaning the blood veins then relax and allow time for the stress free lowering of said blood presure.yet i like her answer also.

Blue Haired Old Lady
It can get serious. High BP can cause stroke, kidney damage, blindness, etc.

Lose weight, exercise, don't drink alcohol, cut back on sodium are all ways to lower blood pressure. Exercise helps the most. 30-60 minutes a day.

The pill raises blood pressure in some women - maybe she could get an IUD or other form of bc.

karen n
this is a good BP. if it was 150+ i would worry. nowt wrong with that blood pressure mate!

ideally you want it to be around 120/80... some doctors say 120/70.

it's not ridiculously high, no. but it's something to keep an eye on for sure.

The bottem number is a little high. Diet and exercise can lower it. Stopping smoking works too.

The reading isn't cause for concern,no. Even if diabetic, it isn't within treatment range either. That's very remiss of her Doctor to be honest. It's only slightly above optimal (optimal being <120/80). Single readings are never diagnostic anyway. Her slight elevation could be explained by 'white coat syndrome'. Buy one of those BP monitors and for one week, record her BP 3 times daily. If it's consistently high then she may need to think about coming off the Pill. The Pill can cause high blood pressure.

If she is overweight, it could also be that. If she smokes she must stop and try to encourage her to reduce sodium in her diet. Exercise is always a must- this should all be done regardless.

Her reading isn't concerneing now, but as PJ correctly points out, it could be an indication for problems further down the line. Is she diabetic? Does she have any other heath problems?
