StayAtHome MOM
Divertculosis is the presence of small, sac-like swellings or pouches (diverticula) in the walls of the large intestine. Diverticula may appear anywhere in the large intestine but they are most common in the sigmoid colon, the last part of the large intestine before the rectum. A diverticula bulges at a point of weakness, usually where an artery penetrates the muscle layer of the large intestine. Diverticula may vary in diameter from one tenth of an inch to more than an inch. Giant diverticula are rare outpouchings that range from 1 to 6 inches in diameter. A person may only have a single giant diverticulum.

Diverticulitis is inflammation of an abnormal pouch (diverticulum) in the intestinal wall, usually found in the large intestine (colon). The presence of the pouches themselves is called diverticulosis.

I have diverticulitis. It is places in the lower intestine.
The Doctor's call the places pockets. Sometimes they can
become holes in the intestines. I cannot eat nuts, seeds
and any other thing that can get in the pockets and cause an
infection. I have had several infections and it is awful. No
Doctor has mentioned a surgery however.

Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots, like an inner tube that pokes through weak places in a tire. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. Pouches (plural) are called diverticula. The condition of having diverticula is called diverticulosis. About 10 percent of Americans over the age of 40 have diverticulosis. The condition becomes more common as people age. About half of all people over the age of 60 have diverticulosis.

When the pouches become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis.

Unless she has severe complications from it like an obstruction, she shouldn't need surgery. Just medication to make the infection go away, and then care in her diet to make sure she gets enough fiber.
