Is diabetes contagious?
just wondering.

UFO Wrestler
Nope. It's genetic or you can get it by eating too much sugar and your body can't process it.

margie k
NO. but it is genetic, so if members of your family have it, you have a higher risk of getting it. Also if you eat a very bad diet you run a risk of getting it, such as lots of sugary and fatty foods, by being overweight too. Lindy Loo is wrong, you most certainly can get diabetes with a poor diet. Please don't listen to her.

genetically yes, contagious by physical contact no.

godd some people are mean...
but no diabetes is not contagious.
my grandma has it, my great grandma, my aunt, and a LOT of people in my family have it...and i am around them enough.
i dont have it.
but no you can reduce the risk of getting diabetes by having a healthy diet and not eating too much sugar..
hope this helped..

much love,

Lindy Loo
No it is not contagious but if anyone else in your family is diabetic then there is a chance you could become diabetic - doctors have said that it may skip a generation - I don't think this is altogether true
UFO your answer is incorrect. Quote: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes happens when the cells in the pancreas (pronounced: pan-kree-us) that make insulin are destroyed. This process isn't related to how much sugar a person eats. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can't respond to insulin normally. In most cases, the tendency to get type 2 diabetes is inherited, or linked to the genes someone gets from his or her parents, but eating too much sugar (or foods with sugar, like candy or regular soda) can cause weight gain, which can increase a person's risk for developing the disease.

one and only
no its not but stupidness is

no it is not contagious. and again i am insulted i have had type 1 diabetes for 10 years and im tired of people thinking i cant have sugar and that im contagious! stop asking stupid questions!

Not contagious. But if it runs in your family, then chances are you'll end up with it . You may also develop diabetes if you're way overweight (or skinny for that matter but have bad eating habits, e.g. tons of sugar, fast food and no fruits or veggies). People who are under stress for a good while (months and months if not years) may also develop that condition.

No, it is not contagious.

No. Absolutely not.

Absolutely not!

turtles are my life :}
only genetically.

In short, no, it is not contagious. It is an autoimmune disease and is not in any way infectious.

no but it is genetic so if someone in your family has it you a higher risk of getting it

Oh boy, now I have seen it all. Absolutely not.

Hi Angela,

No, Diabetes is definitely NOT contagious at all!

However, if there is someone in your family who has it, especially Type 2, it is possible that you may one day develop it.

There are 2 types of Diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1, which used to be called Juvenile Diabetes because children always got it, is an auto-immune disease. It is now just called Type 1 because adults now get it also. Type 2 used to be called adult-onset diabetes because adults always got it. It is now called Type 2 because many children also get it.

A person has no control over getting Type 1 since it's an auto-immune disease. However, a person can have some control over getting Type 2. There is usually a family history of it, which lets the person know they are at risk. Also, obesity is the main reason they will get Type 2; so, it is very important to eat well and to exercise, especially if there is a family history of Type 2.

I hope this has been helpful for you.

I wish you the best of luck.
