Does diabetes affect one's ability to drive well?

Well I've been diabetic for 8 yrs. and i would say no. I've never had any problem driving due to my diabetes. HOWEVER, if you don't monitor your sugar levels constantly i guess it can affect your driving. For example, if you get in your car before checking your sugar and you are low you can get the shakes and feel weak and that can affect the way you drive. If it goes too low or too high you can pass out. But, if you always have it on check like you should there shouldn't be a problem driving.

diabetes has a long list of side effects but i know that vision can be impaired as well as the nervous system causing loss of sensation in the feet.

te144
If it blinds you or severely affects your vision or causes such things as blackouts or outright unconsciousness.

hsmommy06
Yes if your sugar is too high or too low it can impair your vision- cause blurry vision.

Diabetes affects all areas of the body! From the small blood vessels in the eyes and the ones farthest away in the feet!
Should a diabetic be driving and develop low sugar there's a possibility they could pass out! In so doing their car becomes a 2 thousand pound _-*WEAPON*-_!!!
Test before you drive!

diabetes sometimes does affect the eyes/vision. also, like with my aunt, something went wrong, not really sure what, but she lost the feeling in her feet. she had to get a toe removed. also, when you lose the feelings in your feet, that could hurt your ability to drive cause you may not know how much pressure you're putting on the gas/ break..

joyce
If your blood sugar is messed up you could get in an accident. My boyfriend with diabetes used to pass out. If you monitor your blood sugar and eat right or use an insulin pump you'd be safer.

grummpy
drive well? no
drive at all? YES, if your sugar crashes.

Bai
It shouldn't as long as they are completely up to date and careful with injections and levels etc. Depends what sort and how severe. If you are sensible it should be fine.

It can, but it ususally doesn't. Keep track of your blood
sugar and you won't pass out at the wheel.

It can. Those who are insulin dependant cannot get DOT approval to drive long-haul trucks.

Yes. My x-boss was diabetic. When his sugar level was high, he would actually fall asleep at a red light. It was scary. He would fall asleep very easily.

Yes. If your blood sugar is High or Low, your vision could be impaired, and you could feel shaky/nervous/irritable(road rage) and other things, along with extreme confusion. I was watching COPS the other night, and a police officer pulled over some drunk driver who was weaving all over the road. Only he wasn't drunk. He was having a low blood sugar reaction.

only if your sight is bad from poor diabetes control or you have a low blood sugar attack whilst driving, if the diabetes is controlled it shouldn't at all

It can when you first get it because it affects your vision. You cannot even get glasses to help until they eyes become stable. This would definately affect your ability to drive. Some diabetics also lose feeling in their feet sometimes.

Diet and exercise are very important! Do what they tell you to and you may end up not having to take medicine!!! Many of these sites have diet information.

Good Luck!

Well it depends on if the person handles and controls the diabetes. My father in law has lost some vision from diabetes, his driving is awful. Now he does not drive, and he was only 54 so not from old age.

In 1 answer ,yes, If you have a "hypo" you can collapse and go into a coma and possible die. Now it does work the other way to, if you are to "hyper" you can get "light headed" and dizzy, best carry a "fast" sugar with you at all time's. If you feel your going to have a Hypo eat the "fast sugar" pull over if driving, and do a blood test. once you feel better, make sure you get some "carbohydrate"s" into your system.
Last thing, make sure you keep your blood sugar levels under control.
