is it possible to get lung cancer after 1 year of smoking?
like 10 a day. im 17 years old male. help im worried

neutralsunflower
You won't get it in a year, but you can get it later in your life. Cancer takes a while to form. You're definitely at a very high risk later in your life if you smoke ten a day. If you get on a healthy diet and quit, you'll be more likely to avoid it later on, so don't fuel the fire, so to speak.

You don't have to be a smoker or be around anyone that smokes to get it. On the other hand many that smoke never get lung cancer, But then too it just is not lung cancer that you can get from smoking.
Check out this link, hopefully it will make you not want to smoke.

I'd advise you to stop just for your health, but really anyone can get it. People get lung cancer without smoking, some people get it after 3 months of smoking, and my grandfather smoked from 19-87 and died of natural causes so it depends. But don't take the chances, just quit now, good luck!

Sure, some people get lung cancer & they never smoked at all!

phelpsphan
yep...but not very likely. if you quit and only smoked for a year i wouldn't be worried

huskypimp
10 a day is a lil excessive so yes, it is possible, but since you're so young it is unlikely.

It is possible, but then again i know of people who have smoked since they were 16 and lived to be 90, it depends on the body of hte person, overall smoking has detrimental effects upon your health, but im assuming you know those risks and choose to smoke anyway therefore none of my business... but yes, smoking for only 1 year or 1 time, or never, it does not matter, you could contract lung cancer.

Carebear
Are you still smoking, or you've smoked for a year and quit?

My mom quit smoking, and 15 years later she got lung cancer and passed away. So whether she had the cancer at the time she quit and it slowly grew, or she got it later in life. Only God knows. It's very unlikely you will get lung cancer at 17.

Natalie
I've never heard of such a thing... But lots of things can cause lung cancer. The best way to reduce your risk is to quit. It takes 7 years for your lungs to replenish themselves as much as they can.. and if you don't have lung cancer from smoking then you're alright. But honestly, with one year of smoking, I doubt the lifelong habit has done it's damage yet.

Yes...... even for those who never touched a cig in their life can still get lung cancer!

everyones body is different, so some smokers may get cancer after many years of smoking, others may get it after a few months, perhaps even sooner. You can even get cancer through inhaling someone elses smoke. It may not be very likely, and smoking is certainly not the only cause of cancer, but it is certainly not helping. Smoking is the most popular cause of cancer, and getting it at any time at all after starting to smoke is not impossible, since each time you light up you are increasing your chances. You are posting on here as you are clearly worried, so if you really want to be able to live a long life and see those you care about for much longer then i would suggest you at least try and stop. Find something to do whenever you feel like a smoke as a replacement, eg a new hobby or something you have always been interested in, it wont be easy at first but it WILL get easier the longer you stay off the cigarettes, and after a while you will indeed have stopped and very glad you are no longer gambling your life away and making greedy cigarette companies very wealthy indeed. saving a great deal of your own money in the process!

jenisisgrafix
i think its possible, why do you think you have lung cancer? probably something else

doobiedoobiedoo
It's always possible but unlikely. Why are you worried? Are you coughing blood? Because if so, you should see a doctor.

Michele L
i don't know about cancer but it takes 10 years for your lungs to go back to normal once you quit smoking.... so maybe you should stop now? ask a doctor, not randoms on Yahoo lol.

It's possible to get lung cancer even if you don't smoke at all. My Great Aunt is 80 now, and cancer free for 20 years. When she was 60, she was diagnosed with severe lung cancer and now only has 1/2 of a lung TOTAL. Yes, they removed 1 1/2 lungs. SHE NEVER SMOKED A CIGARETTE IN HER LIFE. You're not going to get cancer right now but just make a conscious effort to see that you don't smoke anymore. You increase your chances every time you are exposed to smoking, even second hand.

ryan_purdue8589
You can get lung cancer after one cigerette.

if you're worried then you should just stop.
and we dont know the exact causes of cancer. some people can smoke their whole lives and have nothing happen, and others could never have smoked in their lives and then die of lung cancer. theres no definite answer to this.

yess its possible by just smoking 1.. or even second hand smoke.

I AM NOT SURE, BUT YOU SHOULD STOP SMOKING. I KNOW IT'S ADDICTIVE, BUT PLEASE, STOP IT IS SO BAD FOR YOU. I HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER WHO HAS LIVED TO BE IN HIS LATE 80'S, AND HE STOPPED SMOKING OVER 40 YRS. AGO, BUT HIS LUNGS ARE ALMOST GONE. HE IS CONSTANTLY IN THE HOSPITAL, AND HE HAS MAJOR PROBLEMS BREATHING. YOU MAY BE OK, BUT PLEASE STOP NOW WHILE YOU CAN BEFORE YOUR HEALTH IS GONE.

It's possible to get lung cancer from secondhand smoke. Your best bet is to stop smoking now and start taking better care of yourself.

Yes; You can even get cancer without ever smoking. Smoking increases your risk of cancer.

If you stop smoking, your risk for cancer and coronary heart disease will be less.

douglo95
its possible to lung cancer having never been around a cigarette in you life

Incendiary
No one can say for sure, it's certainly possible. Everyone's body is different, and the development of cancer is still very much a mystery.

My father had been smoking for a little over 2 years when he developed throat cancer.

Patriot1776
Anyone can get lung cancer, smokers or not.

My grandpa has smoked his whole life till he was in his 70's ... he's now 97 and breathes just fine.

Genetics has a lot to due with it, but smoking 10 a day sure will increase your chances.

Gamay

yes. even if you just inhale 2nd hand smoke.
And I know someone who smoked only for 8months, same, 10 sticks a day, quit and after 5 years developed lung cancer. He was 18 at the time.
Quit smoking.

What has you worried? Smoking isn't the ONLY thing that causes lung cancer... why don't you just quit smoking. I sincerely doubt that you have lung cancer ;)

However, EVERY puff of a cigarette you take increases your chances of getting lung cancer by an extremley miniscule percentage.

Fly in the Ointment
It is possible to get it even if you never smoked. They think it is a gene but they are not sure.
