You can't be serious...you read the Times.

Cancer deaths are up because of factors not at all related to smoking, but the environment and the chemicals we consume each day. And maybe as some believe they aren't up at all but just better reported than years past.

My preacher's wife just died of cancer and never smoked or drank a day in her life. Who really knows. My dad the same. My best friend died of breast cancer and smoked all of her life.

Having been a smoker for over 10 years and only been a quitter for the last 5...I can say my life is better. I can breath for a change and smell things better than I have for years...though my nose is so damaged I still don't smell well. I can go anywhere for any length of time and not worry about where or when I'll have my next smoke. I don't have to stand outside in the cold and rain to feed an addiction. I'm not led by the nose. My life is not dictated by my need to feed the monster inside...that made my cough up phlegm every morning in the sink. The monster that cost me $10 a week, $40 a month, and almost $500 a year. The monster that made my clothes hamper wreak....not to mention my person. I could not smell me because I was immune, but others could and oh what an odor on someone's clothes but that of an old ash tray....now that's attractive.

There are so many other addictions that are far less aggressive and repulsive. No need to blacken your lungs and foul the air to satisfy your nerves.

Have to say I would have never been able to quit had I not become pregnant and it made my heave just at the smell...or I would smoke to this day and hate the addiction even more with each day as I did then....

There is something about having no control. I like to be in control.

I've always been a non-smoker. I have nothing to do with an increase in the sale of tranq's. I think cig smoking is disgusting and the smell of 2nd hand smoke on clothing in enough to make me want to vomit.

Haven't you figured out yet that diseases that people had 50 years ago that were fatal back then have been wiped out now. There is no Polio, Small Pox, Diphtheria, Chicken Pox, and Measles practically on the planet. Most of these diseases are preventable. This means people who would have had cancer if they lived longer now can get it. In 1950 my aunt while in her 20's died of something called Hodgkin's Disease. In 1999 I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma when I was 51, the same exact disease she had. She died in 4 months after the disease was discovered. I am now seven plus years in remission.

I don't know where the Times got their information but they obviously did not look at the big picture.

Also, for the person who said people live longer that is why cancer is on the rise is totally wrong. Cancer does not discriminate by age. Anyone at anytime in their life can have it.

Cant understand why cancer deaths should increase due to people stopping smoking, does not make sense.
i stopped smoking nearly 2 years ago, most smokers try to stop smoking at least once every year, i know i did.

Smoking is a DIEING HABIT it is no longer cool or big to smoke nor does it make you seem more mature.

Smoking is just disgusting and smelly and stopping smoking was the best thing i have done in a long tiime.

Also the price for cigerettes is ludicous (bad spelling sorry) and most of it goes straight to the goverment in the form of taxes and i for one am not happy to give those fat cats more of my money.

Cancer deaths are rising, more kids have autism, ect. I think it is because the are keeping track or things more these days. And that they are able to properly diagnose people with more specific diseases. Technology to properly diagnose has changed drastically with new and more modern inventions in healthcare. CT scans and MRI were invented around the 1970s, but there are contrast dyes that are used to enhance the pictures compared to older methods. And we've known about cancer for how long?

Cigarette smoke causes emphysema. If you think causing emphysema is a good thing, you are either nuts or just twisted and sick.

Deaths from cancer are rising as the environmental causes of cancer have been around for so long and and carcinogens act over a long period. It means that a fall in the rate of cancer deaths due to smoking will not take place for quite a few years. You haven't said if the increase in cancer deaths is due to smoking related cancers or all types of cancer.

The reason that tranquiliser sales has increased is because the prescribing of tranquilisers and anti-depressants has been increasing steadily anyway.

I smoke and I like the atmosphere in buildings now that smoking has been banned in them. No culture was killed off; it simply changed.

yes it was me. i did it. please thrash me with a knotted rope or stick some pins in my eyes. you can do it in the lovely pub full of clean air that i drink in.

I am a non smoker and I haven't been buying any tranquilizers. Don't have cancer either, so I am not increasing either.

Sarah J
I'm a non smoker who is not even anti-smoking!

Luvfactory
Not only they increased the sale of tranquilisers but also other anti-depressants. Also, there are always new drugs come out, which now people get addicted to in order to replace a void created by the anti-smokers and their culture. It is always the ex-smokers who make the biggest noise, those friends of mine who never smoked in their lives are not interested whether a building has smoking area or not. Cancer deaths are on the rise, not long ago there was a news article here on Yahoo news reporting that scientists predict that we will see an all-time high in cancer cases by the year 2020. If everybody stops smoking by then (or almost everybody) then why are these cancers on the rise? Anyway, a lot less people smoke now than 10 years ago, so even in just 10 years we should see a little decrease in cancers rather than an all-time high! Anyway, I've just read on yahoo news that if you are healthy (non-smoker, non-drinker, not obese) you cost a lot more to the health service than if you are a fat smoker. I don't know where they get the idea of a fat smoker, because all my smoking friends, including me, are thin or normal. Most of my non-smoking friends are either slightly overweight, overweight or on the way of becoming obese.

Just to let u know..I AM A SMOKER.
Being a smoker I will answer that...Non-smokers haven't done anything, so what are u rambling on about? The question u should be asking is: Smokers, What have u (we) done?
Whoopdee-do, the politicians are learning to use their brain & crack down on cigarettes.
Do u not know what smoking can do to U? I do.
I'm only 34 and I already have Lung Dis. & Emph. & will probably drop dead within a couple years..& Y...It sure isn't because of the non-smokers wanting to live their lives, it's because of us smokers not giving a damn about our health or anyone else's for that matter..Now that I'm dying from smoking my eye's had seen the light. Yes I do still smoke, no sense in me quitting, what does make sense is where I smoke. Thank You non-smokers for caring about us idiots.
