Why does pasta make me feel so ill?
At first I put it down to coincidence but now I'm pretty sure there's something about pasta that doesn't agree with me.
- I can't finish a plateful. I adore pasta, it's my favourite meal, but it makes me so full. I ate about an hour ago but it's still taking sheer will power not to just let it all come back up. I'm in so much discomfort right now.
- I get really bad gas after eating it, mainly belching. Like, I can feel something shift in my tummy and lots of air comes out at once. (Loud and embarrassing.)
- When I burp the food comes back up. Sorry, this bit is a bit graphic - but when the pasta comes back up into my mouth it doesn't even feel mushy. Like it's been sat in my stomach for ages and still nothing has happened. It's hard and disgusting.
- This next thing is something that has only happened this one time, but I got the feeling I needed the loo, desperately, but when I went all that came out was a little bit of mucusy stuff. That creeped me out a bit.
- I feel so tired, like I could just lie down and sleep.
- After pasta I feel generally hot and bothered, uncomfortable.

I'm not allergic to anything, and I don't think I am allergic to pasta because I would have noticed earlier. I've only started getting these symptom in the last couple of months.

It could be wheat, or even eggs, depending in what kind of pasta it is.

Sounds like a wheat intolerance. They can start at any age I think.

Pasta is a really heavy wheat carbohydrate. Have you been tested to see if you are allergic to wheat?

get tested for Coeliac, you can either go to the doctor for a blood test or a health food shop for skin testing (£15/20)
i am a coeliac,it means your allergic to mainly wheat and gluten. no veli in your stomach so it can't process these food types.

You can become allergic to wheat, which is in pasta, bread, cake, etc. I developed a wheat allergy when I was 20. You could also have Celiac Sprue. My friend has that, and it didn't get bad for her until she was 22. Celiac Sprue means you can't have any grain, but it comes with more gastrointestinal problems than an allergy.

Go see your regular doctor, then an allergist. They can do blood tests for food allergies now. Just remember, for a food allergy to show up on the test, you have to have eaten the food in the past 24 or so hours. Make sure you ask about that, and if your doctor doesn't know about it, go to another one. I've been to several; it took me 8 years before someone actually told me exactly what to do.

I would say you have a wheat allergy

My first thoughts would be to have your doctor check for a wheat allergy (allergies can develop or go away as time passes); either that or you may be having the early warning signs of gall bladder issues. It sounds a lot like the early symptoms I had with gall bladder. Good news is, once its gone, you can eat pasta again to your heart's content!

try gluten free pasta and see how that works for you. You might be a coeliac - a person who cannot tolerate gluten. Gluten is present in bread, pasta, cakes and cookies, pretty much anything that has flour in it. good luck

It could be the wheat flour used in pasta. Pasta bothers me too. Some people have sensitivities to wheat. Stop eating it for a while and see if it makes a difference.

Try going on a wheat free diet for 3-4 weeks...after that if you feel different or better then I suggest you keep it up as it probably means you have a wheat intolerance. If not go see your doctor.
Allergies can develop so even if you did not have one before it could have developed.

Yes, it certainly sounds like you have developed a wheat or gluten intolerance and this leads to symptoms that are generally identified with IBS. You may also have an ulcerated stomach and the yeast in wheat will exacberate the symptoms. Avoid wheat as much as possible and see if it is still the same after a few days, if so then I would advise a trip to the doctor.

Allergies can crop up from nowhere - you don;t necessarily have them all your life so it could be one. Go to the doctor and stop eating pasta for a while. Try non-wheat pasta if youa re desperate for it!

I'm not sure about the stuff with your digestion, that might be a problem with how your body is breaking down the pasta.

My sister has the same issues with potatoes (same deal with the carbs). I would stay away from foods that are high in starch, like pasta and potatoes and lots of bread, and try to eat things that your body can break down more easily.

You should talk to a doctor about it, because it might be a hint about a bigger issue, like with your blood sugar, or something like that.

Is it the gluton? Do you have problems with bread also? Try a gluton-free pasta and see if that improves things.

Gluton is a protein in wheat that many people have trouble digesting. You can buy a supplement that aids digestion or by pasta made with gluton-free flour.


A general wheat allergy is another possibility.
