Nosebleeds, nose up or down?
Recently i had a nose bleed and my parents said put your head up and get a tissue then head down.
But like last month when i had it in school the teachers told me to keep it down at all times.
Which one should i do and why??

Christopher
You keep your head up until you get a tissue or something so you don't get blood everywhere.
But you really should keep your head down to let the blood come out as if you keep your head up it could clot.

When you have a nosebleed, the best thing to do is pinch your nose closed firmly and sit quietly for 10-15 min. Sitting upright, leaning forward slightly, with your head in a neutral position is best because:

1. Putting your head back can cause the blood to run down your throat and into your stomach. This can cause nausea and potentially vomiting - yuck!

2. Putting your head down increases intracranial pressure, which can increase bleeding.

If you feel faint or lightheaded, you can lie down, but keep your head elevated on a couple pillows.

Hope this helps :-)

I always keep mine at the natural level with a tissue. Tilting it back can force blood down your throat, but it also ruins clothes and carpet. Tilting forward can force more blood out.

If its gushing you should keep your head down so it can flow out and not make a mess, plus it help get it over with. If its a small nose bleed keep you head up so your body can fix the problem before it gets too bad. Also pinch the soft part just below the bone.

you should press the nose bridge, lean forward, and SLIGHTLY tilt your head forward...

i had read most of the answers in your question... well one of them got the right answer but messed up with his/her rationalization...

you shouldn't tilt your head up since doing do, will drive the blood towards your throat putting you to high risk of aspiration manifested by coughing and difficulty to breathe...

and leaning for forward will help to secure the blood only in the nasal cavity... it won't cause any increase in the intracranial pressure since you are not occluding any veins or even arteries... just make sure that you apply enough but not too much pressure within 5 - 10 minute depending on how severe the bleeding was...

for violebt reactions for my answer, feel free to email me...
