Is Pepcid used for itching?
I think I MIGHT have had an allergic reaction because I broke out and it started itching a lot so I went to the doctor and he prescribed me protozone. He also said for me to take a benedryl and if that doesn't help to take pepcid....
WTF? Isn't pepcid for stomache acid? Or can it be used for itching?
Additional Details
I'm one hundred percent sure my doctor said Pepcid. My mom was in the room with me and she heard him too. We were both a little confused when he said it.

I heard that when pepcid is taken with a benadryl they work off of each other to work better or something. Is this true?

Lisa A
No, Pepsid isn't for itching. It's for acid reflux. I think you must be misremembering. I don't think you misheard, because I can't think of anything plausible that sounds like Pepsid. You may have translated in your mind from what your doctor said to "really common OTC medication" and come up with Pepsid, when he actually said Claratin, or something like that.

Jacqueline B
Yeah Pepcid is for stomach acid, your best bet is to use Benadril or Allegra they both work really well. I use them everytime I have an allergic reaction. My doctor actually gave me Allegra when I broke out in a rash from a bad reaction to penicillin, works great. You can pick up either one from your local drug store.

Some medications have dual uses. For instance, Phenergan (promethazine) which is commonly used for nausea and pepcid are both histamine blockers a.k.a. an anti-histamine (like benedryl a.k.a. diphenhydramine).

Histamine is what is released when you have an allergic reaction. An anti-histamine won't fix the reaction that has already happened, it stops future reaction or more histamine from being released.

Taking benedryl and pepcid at the same time is like taking aspirin and motrin. Two different types of medicines, but both accomplish the same task. Some work better for one person than others. If you take them both, be prepared it may knock you out for a few hours!

continue taking benedryl and pepcid. an allergic reaction can affect more than one body system which is why your doctor is treating the most important ones. follow up with an allergist.

You should call your doctor for clarification. I don't think pepcid is for allergic reactions, but better to clarify with him than to take some thing you shouldn't

Your doctor gave you good info. As previously stated itching is generally caused by a histamine response. The body has two types of histamine receptor cells - H1 receptor cells and H2 receptor cells. Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, etc, are H1 receptor cell antagonists. Pepcid, Zantac and thers are H2 receptor cell antagonists. There are many H2 receptors in your GI system (stomach), but there are also many in your dermal (skin) cells. The Pepcid really should help w/ the itching. Hope this helps you out.
