I'm allergic to detergents, what should I do about it?
Is there any way to simply get rid of that allergy? I'm quite troubled by it.

Gaylord F
dont use them then

omg how awful...they make detergent for allergic skin also you just half to read on but in the meantime wear gloves be and be careful on contact with it...

Only an allergist can tell you for sure.

Use organic stuff without the bad chemicals and also asked your doc what you're allergic to.

I'm afraid that once you develop an allergy, you're stuck with it. It may be the case that you're allergic to the perfumes in detergent; if you've tried hypo-allergenic detergents and still get a reaction, then you'll have to figure out some other way to clean your clothing. You can boil your clothes if you have to, or maybe send them to the dry cleaners.

I'm sure you can't just get rid of it. However, you can probably find different natural or organic detergents that will either give you a less severe reaction or use less detergent, rinse twice and see if that helps.

Immunotherapy has very limited results on contact allergy. You didn't mention exactly what in the detergent causes your problem. Many detergents have enzymes that are there to remove stains, but because they contain proteins they can cause allergic reactions. If that is the case, try a soy-based cleaner like the Enviro-Rite brand. Since immunotherapy won't get rid of the allergy, you are going to have to focus on avoidance. I will give you a link to a place that sells all kinds of allergy free cleaners and detergents.

Not really as it won't go away on its own. You have to avoid using regular detergents. Here is a website for allergy users and have cleaning products as well as detergents that are biodegradeable and easy on your skin. Look under safe cleaning on the left hand side.

Sadly there is no way (that I know of) to get rid of a skin allergy. You can however switch to special detergents that people sometimes use for newborns and small children. One that I know of (which is sold here in the U.S.) is called Dreft. No dyes or fragrances, and it's super gentle on skin. Another thing you can do is to double rinse your clothes. When you wash them, run your washing machine on just a rinse cycle. That should eliminate any left over residue from your detergent. Other than these options, I don't know what to tell you. I feel ya though, I just had an incident with some "not- so-nice" body wash.

Now that is one I should have thought of a long time ago. Good way to get out of doing laundry and the dishes as well as other things.

Allergies are difficult to predict. mine just left and never came back. It was milk that I could not have when a baby and later no problem. I had to drink goats milk. Some p[people are plagued with them all their lives. Some use them as an excuse to get attention or get out of doing work. So
you see it is not always easy to know what to do.

If you mean clothing detergents, you could goto a doctor to find out what part of the detergent you react to and then find a detergent that doesn't have that ingredient.

Could be the perfume in them, that you are actually allergic to. Try the ones that say, no perfume added.

If it's laundry detergent you are talking about there is "Unscented" " including the dryer sheets.

Will You Take The Red Pill ?
use dreft ..no you have to go to an allergist.. which can take months

Well there's always medications... Or switching detergent.. ALL has a free/clear as does TIDE I think.. .Also, try using less detergent and spot treat "spots".. I also use the extra rinse cycle and use baking soda in the wash water to "boost" my detergent power.. Generally, people use too much detergent in the wash... Try that and see how you do.... Good luck

There are detergents that are used for sensitive skin people...Ivory is one of them...Tide has one out there too!!

I would recommend looking online for allergy free detergents or remedies like that organic stuff the previous answerer said before.

Here are some links.

They might help.

use shampoo to wash ur cloths i have to do it to my nephew because he is allergic too

Have you tried dreft?
You might want to see your doctor also!

Kathy M
I don't know if you could get rid of an allergy, but have you tried Purex? It is usually pretty good for people with allergies. Also you could make your own. It is a little bit of work, but that also works for some people

try using hypoallergenic...detergent, fab softner, and dryer sheets...perfume free, dye free...and talk to your doctor about a allergy medicine prescription.

Jamie Lee
use gloves. if that didnt work at all then dont touch any detergents simple
