Can one overcome a cat allergy?
If you're around cats enough, do allergies tend to dissipate? I had a friend that was very allergic to cats and when she came around my house that used to have 8 cats, she seemed to get less and less allergic. She'd still be sneezy and her eyes would irritate her, but no where near when she first started coming over.
I have this other friend who says he cannot be around cats, so I think he's worried about coming over here. I now only have one cat that doesn't shed very much. Is it possible he'd get used to being around my cat over time?
Additional Details
Aggie: This is a totally different household than the one with 8 cats. It WAS my Mom's house (I'm sure he'd go into shock there), and this is my apartment where there has only been one cat. Also, I always wash blankets and other linens frequently....the carpets were also shampooed a few months ago.
I'm not trying to FORCE him here, lol...geezus!

Some people are simply have more severe reactions than others. Just because one friend is doing fine, that doesn't mean the other will. For some people, like my husband, you can be desensitized by being around the animals. However, this is not common. Most people who are allergic to cats (pet dander) will stay that way. You don't know how he would react and shouldn't expect him to put himself in harms way to come to your house. He knows his body and you should respect that. Also, it doesn't matter how much you cat sheds. Pet dander is like tiny flakes of skin and oil from you pets that gets everywhere. Even if the other 7 cats are gone, their dander is still there. If you want to make your house better, wash everything, walls carpets, fabrics. That may help alleviate some of the symptoms for your first friend.

I'm allergic to cats, dogs, dust, etc. I know how it feels after years of wanting to get a dog. Get Claritin.

It actually depends. There are some allergies that are permanent, and cannot be treated. However, some allergies can be outgrown. I have aquagenic urticaria- this means when I get wet for a prolonged period of time, I get rashes. Doctor says I'll outgrow it eventually.

All the Best

sorry but the answer is No. There is no cure for animal dander.

I don't know if his allergy will dissipate in a short amount of time. You may want to keep the cat in another room while he is there.
