This medication is used after other medications to treat a certain liver disease (Wilson's disease). This inherited disease causes the liver to hold onto too much copper, resulting in liver damage and other serious problems. This medication causes the intestines to make more of a certain substance (a protein) that prevents the body from absorbing too much copper from food, thereby preventing further damage.

Uses
This medication is used after other medications to treat a certain liver disease (Wilson's disease). This inherited disease causes the liver to hold onto too much copper, resulting in liver damage and other serious problems. This medication causes the intestines to make more of a certain substance (a protein) that prevents the body from absorbing too much copper from food, thereby preventing further damage.
Notes
  • Do not share this medication with others.Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., 24-hour urine copper) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects.
  • Consult your doctor for more details.

Storage
  • Store at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
  • Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.
  • Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Overdose
  • Symptoms of overdose may include: stomach/abdominal pain, mental changes, increased thirst, decrease in urine production.

How To Use
  • Take this medication by mouth, usually 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor.
  • Take each dose at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after all food or beverages (except water).
  • Swallow the capsule whole.
  • Do not crush or chew the capsules.Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.
  • To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Side Effects
  • Upset stomach may occur.
  • If this effect persists or worsens, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
  • Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: change in the amount of urine, red/brown urine, unusual tiredness.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
  • However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Before taking zinc acetate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.This drug may pass into breast milk and could have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.
  • Therefore, breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.
  • Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially: quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ofloxacin), tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline).
