This combination medication is used to temporarily treat dry cough with chest congestion caused by the common cold, flu, or other breathing illnesses (e.g., sinusitis, bronchitis). Guaifenesin is an expectorant that works by making the mucus in the lungs less thick. This helps to loosen the mucus so that it is easier to cough up. Carbetapentane is a cough suppressant that works by acting on a part of the brain (cough center) to reduce the need to cough. This medication is generally not used for ongoing coughs from smoking, asthma, other long-term breathing problems (e.g. emphysema), or coughs with a lot of mucus, unless directed by your doctor. This medication should not be used in infants and newborns. The tablet/capsule form of this medication is not recommended for use in children younger than 6 years old. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
