Side Effects
I have genital herpes. I have to take Valtrex not only for my genital herpes, but because I have a condition where I've been to the hospital three times for herpes related meningitis. It's a nightmare. But, of course, my sores haven't been on my body in such a long time.

Additional Thoughts
Before Valtrex, I was arguably more lively. Now, I get tired all the time. Times when I want to go out and have fun (I'm 20) I get exhausted and just stay home. Sometimes when I take it I get headaches. I sleep all day and stay up all night. It's exhausting. I really hate taking this but I don't want to get sick again. Also, it really messes with my cycle. Wow. My cycle has been so irregular even since being on this medicine.

Side Effects
I only experienced slight dry mouth or thirst if I didn't drink enough water when taking the pill. When I first started taking it, I did get dizzy one time, but only for a minute and I was fine after laying down briefly.

Additional Thoughts
Symptoms improved and I started healing in two days after starting the medication. (I had already had the outbreak for about 3 days before starting medicine.) Completely healed in about 6 days on medication. I cannot tell if it decreased the severity of my symptoms because it was my first time with an outbreak and my first time on the medication. I was grateful to heal relatively quickly, regardless of the cause (natural or medicine). I took the generic drug and it cost $208 for 20 pills (10 days). I believe the brand name (Valtrex) was over $300.

Reason: Cold Sores Date: 9 August 2009
Side Effects
I have never had Genital Hepes or Cold Sores before in my life until this winter when I began getting very painful Cold Sores in my nostrils. I began taking Valtrex in Feb. and the sores disappeared! They came back just last week and my doctor gave me 1000mg tabs. I took them and last night I had my first nightmare since I was 12 (I am 44 now). It was so real that I was terrified to go back to sleep for fear I would just go right back to where I woke myself up. I did not have this or any other side effect the first time I took these pills, so I am re-thinking taking Valtrex ever again.

Side Effects
I have had a few really vivid nightmares once in a while since I started taking this medication. The reason I'm posting this is that I had one last night & I can't even explain how real it felt. I forced myself with all of my strength to wake up & once I did I felt completely disoriented, lightheaded, and confused. I was terrified to go back to sleep. Some hair loss as well. Some depression and mental fogginess. And some increase in IBS symptoms. Really though the occasional extremely intense nightmare is the worst side effect.

Additional Thoughts
Just wanted to get the word out there that there are some kind of weird and scary side effects that might make it not worth taking the drug.

Works like a charm when you take it as soon as you feel an outbreak!
