USES: This medication is used for incomplete emptying of the bladder (urinary retention). Bethanechol may also be used for digestive problems such as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).

Urecholine

Uses
This medication is used for incomplete emptying of the bladder (urinary retention). Bethanechol may also be used for digestive problems such as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).
Notes
  • Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Storage
  • Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.

How To Use
  • Take this medication on an empty stomach one hour before or two hours after meals unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • Nausea or vomiting can occur if this is taken with food.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise.
  • Take this medication as prescribed.
  • Do not increase the dose or take it more frequently without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects
  • This medication may cause stomach ache, excessive sweating, dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, or increased salivation during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication.
  • If these symptoms persist or become severe, inform your doctor.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of asthma, bladder problems, epilepsy, Parkinsonism, blood pressure problems, heart disease, an overactive thyroid gland, stomach/intestinal problems and of any allergies you may have.
  • Because this medication may cause dizziness or lightheadedness when rising quickly from a lying to a standing position, change positions slowly.
  • Also, use caution when performing tasks requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
  • Bethanechol should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is not known if bethanechol is excreted into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered if you should remember within 2 hours of the missed dose.
  • If you remember past 2 hours, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
  • Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of procainamide, quinidine and medications for colds or nasal congestion.
  • Bethanechol can affect certain blood test results.
  • Remind your doctor you are taking this medication before any blood tests are ordered.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
