Paraplatin
Uses
This medication is used alone or in combination with other drugs in the treatment of certain cancers. Notes
- Laboratory tests and blood counts will be done routinely while using this medication to monitor its effects and prevent side effects.
- Aluminum reacts with carboplatin causing a precipitate.
- Do not use needles or IV sets that contain aluminum parts.
Storage
- Once prepared, this medication is stable for only 8 hours.
- Check the expiration date on the label and properly discard of any unused medication after that time.

To Use - HOW TO USE THIS MEDICATION: This medication is administered by infusion into a vein over at least 15 minutes by a health care professional.
- It may be given as one dose every 4 weeks or as 5 smaller doses over 5 days.
- The dose and frequency is based on your blood count and response to previous doses.
Side
Effects - Nausea and vomiting may be severe in about 1/3 of all patients but usually subsides within 24 hours of treatment.
- Medication may be given prior to therapy to help reduce this effect.
- Pain, diarrhea, constipation, change in taste, and hair loss may occur.
- If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor.
- Notify your doctor if you develop mouth sores, unusual bruising or bleeding, weakness, skin rash, flu-like symptoms (chills, fever, weakness), breathing trouble, a rapid, pounding or irregular heartbeat, tingling of the hands or feet or tremors while taking this medication.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing blood disorders or bone marrow disease, kidney disease or any allergies.
- This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
- Consult your doctor before using this medication.
- It is not known if carboplatin passes into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed
Dose - It is important that each dose be used as scheduled.
- If you miss a dose, contact your doctor who will help establish a new dose schedule.
- Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Drug
Interactions - Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take.
- Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
