Uses
This medication is an antibiotic used before bowel surgery to prevent infection. It is also used in the treatment of coma due to liver disease.
Notes
  • Neomycin has been found to have an effect on lowering blood cholesterol levels when used alone or in combination with niacin.
  • This, however, is not an approved use of the drug.
  • If your doctor has prescribed this for you for lowering cholesterol, discuss diet and other drug therapies as well.

Storage
  • Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.

How To Use
  • Take this medication by mouth as directed.
  • May take this on a full or empty stomach.
  • Follow instructions closely regarding diet and other medications.

Side Effects
  • Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach ache, or soreness in mouth or rectal area may occur.
  • If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor.
  • Notify your doctor if you experience ringing in the ears, trouble hearing, dizziness, have difficulty urinating or develop a rash while taking this medication.
  • If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing muscle disorders, Parkinson's disease, hearing loss, bowel disorders, kidney disorders or any allergies especially to antibiotics.
  • This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is not known if neomycin passes into breast milk.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
  • When used before bowel surgery, the doses are scheduled based on when the surgery will occur.
  • Therefore, it is important to take each dose as scheduled and follow the dietary restrictions and bowel cleaning procedures closely.
  • If you miss a dose of this medication or forget a step as outlined, consult your health care professional for advice on establishing a new schedule.
  • Do not "double-up" the dose of medication to catch up.
  • When used for coma, take the missed dose as soon as possible.
  • If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume regular dosing schedule.
  • Do not "double-up" the dose.

Drug Interactions
  • Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take.
  • Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
