Uses
Kanamycin is an antibiotic used for the short-term treatment of certain bacterial infections.
Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- After dilution in correct IV fluids (consult your pharmacist for details), Kanamycin Sulfate is stable at room temperature for 24 hours.
- Discard any unused liquid.
Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of overdose may include: ringing in the ears, change in amount of urine.
How
To Use - Follow all instructions for proper mixing and dilution with the correct IV fluids.
- If you have questions regarding the use of Kanamycin Sulfate, consult your pharmacist.
- Give Kanamycin Sulfate by vein (IV) or directly into a muscle (IM) as directed by your doctor.
- Depending on your medical condition, you may receive Kanamycin Sulfate by another route (e.g., topically or inhaled).
- The dosage and length of treatment is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
- Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.
- Therefore, give Kanamycin Sulfate at evenly spaced intervals.
- Continue to use Kanamycin Sulfate until the fully-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days.
- Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
- To minimize serious side effects, do not use more than 1.5 grams per day of Kanamycin Sulfate or use Kanamycin Sulfate for longer than seven to 10 days, unless directed by your doctor.
- Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration.
- If either is present, do not use the liquid.
- Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely.
- Consult your pharmacist.
Side
Effects - Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or pain at the injection site may occur.

- An allergic reaction to Kanamycin Sulfate is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
- Use of Kanamycin Sulfate for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection).
- Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or any other new symptoms.
- If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
