Reason: I was Prescribed Effexor to be a lower cost alternative for Lexapro... Date: 12 January 2011
Side Effects
I was doing great on Lexapro... I needed to cut cost as I am unemployed at the moment. So my doctor switched me to Effexor... That is where the nightmare began... It started to control my thoughts... it made me suicidal when I had never been before...and it lead up to the day that I almost shot myself... I had to struggle for everything I was worth to get out of the house and get help. I am not alone in this. Effexor is great for some people, but the majority it makes their depression and anxiety (panic attacks) worse and leads to suicidal thoughts and attempts. That was not the worst part of it... According to medical professionals out there who themselves have experienced it... coming of Effexor is as bad as coming off of heroine. I could not explain it in a way that anybody would understand including doctors without them experiencing it... I have just made it past 2 weeks and the effects are just now starting to subside... I have never been so sick and miserable... I wanted to die b/c it was more than I could handle... There is a gene (rs1449683C/T ) that determines how you will handle Effexor.... most people do not tolerate it well.... Be Warned... I never want anybody to go through what I have been through... The web is loaded with facts and data to back everything that I have said. I was only on the medication for 3 weeks and it did this to me... most people take 2 weeks to 1 month to come down from the withdrawals. Some have reported going through over a year who have been on the medication longer....

Additional Thoughts
Also the maker of Effexor has 2 lobbyist for Effexor for every single congress person... why do they need this...??? And why have they not been forth coming about the negative part of their research...??? And why hasn't the FDA done anything about it... The evidence is out there... I am only telling you this with no other purpose that I may spare anybody for this nightmare that I have just gone through....

low sex drive, dry mouth, dizziness sometimes, blured vision, lower appitite, and sometimes nausea.

Time Taken: 9 months

Reason: depression. anxiety. quit smoking. Date: 22 March 2009
Side Effects
I take 75mg. I initially experienced itching. rapid heartrate, jaw clenching, yawning, nausea, headache, extrme sedation etc. Now I have menstrual/fertility problems, anorgasmia, problems with being creative.

Additional Thoughts
This drug has helped with what I wanted, but now the side effects are becoming intolerable. I believe drugs can have very unique effects so I hope people are supported by their family and doctor when taking these. They are both potentially dangerous and lifesaving. I do no think they should be taken for a long time unless regular review is made by the doctor.

sweating, gained weight, problems reaching orgasm

Additional Thoughts
I feel for those individuals who claim to have had a rough time with this drug. I was lucky, I guess, and had very little problem, and it helped me significantly. I would recommend this drug to others in hopes that it will help them as it did for me.

Side Effects
My dose is 450mg day Working up to that dose, early on, I experienced urgency Missing several days dosing causes headache

Additional Thoughts
Many medline sources, (NE J Med, etc.), cite doses of at least 225mg or over are required In summary, the citations clearly indicate that at 225mg, the medication finally BEGINS to elevate dopamine levels (as well as elevations in SE and NE). However, it is only when dopamine if finally stimulated that the ultimate therapeutic effect begins Thus, patients require dosing of 225mg or above for ultimate therapeutic effect. At 450mg, I have no side effects; nor do I experience side effects if I miss a couple days; no side effects if I only take only 1 or 2 pills a day rather than 3 for a period of a week or so..
