Uses
This medication is used for temporary treatment of patent ductus arteriosus, a heart defect in infants, until surgery can be done.
Notes
  • Laboratory tests and continuous monitoring will be done to determine the medication effects and to prevent side effects.

Storage
  • This medication is freshly prepared each day.
  • Properly discard of any unused medication after 24 hours.

Overdose
  • Symptoms of overdose may include interrupted breathing (apnea), slow heartbeat, fever, low blood pressure, weakness, or flushing.

How To Use
  • This medication is infused into a vein using a special pump.
  • The patient will be monitored closely by trained health care professionals while receiving this medication.Therapy will be evaluated continuously and the risks and benefits considered.
  • Discuss them with the doctor.

Side Effects
  • Fever, irritability, stiffness, jitteriness, flushing, diarrhea, easy bruising or bleeding may occur.
  • If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform the doctor.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
  • Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.The patient will be watched closely since seizures, a rapid or slow heart rate and breathing trouble can occur while using this medication.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
  • This medication is for use in infants only.Tell the doctor of: bleeding tendencies, breathing problems, any allergies.

Missed Dose
  • This medication is given on a continuous basis.
  • It is important that each dose be received as scheduled.
