Uses
This medication is used to numb the eye before eye procedures (e.g., removal of foreign objects or stitches from eye) or eye exams (e.g., testing for increased pressure). It works by blocking pain signals.This medication is not for home use. Notes
- Do not share this medication with others.
Storage
- Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
- Keep bottle tightly closed.
- Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
How
To Use - This medication should be applied only by a health care professional before an eye exam or procedure.To apply eye drops, wash your hands first.
- To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface.If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using eye drops.
- Ask your doctor when you can replace your contact lenses.Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration.
- If either is present, do not use the medication.For eye exams, 1 dose of this medication is usually given immediately before the exam.
- For eye procedures, 1 to 5 doses may be given every 5 to 10 minutes or as directed by your doctor.
- Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch.
- Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place 1 drop into the pouch.
- Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure.
- This will prevent the medication from draining out.
- Try not to blink.
- Do not touch or rub your eye because the eye temporarily has no feeling and it can be scratched without your knowledge.
- Repeat these steps for your other eye if so directed or if your dose is for more than 1 drop.Do not rinse the dropper.
- Replace the dropper cap after each use.If you are using another kind of eye medication (e.g., drops or ointments), wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying other medications.
- Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the drops to enter the eye.Do not use this medication more often or use longer than prescribed.
- Doing so may slow the healing of the eye, decrease the time that the effects of the medication last, or cause other eye problems.
Side
Effects - Temporary stinging, burning, or redness may occur.
- If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
- Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: vision changes (e.g., blurred vision, loss of vision), severe eye pain, sensitivity of the eyes to light, watery eyes, eye discharge, feeling as if something is in the eye.Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: restlessness, mental/mood changes (e.g., anxiety, nervousness), slow/irregular heartbeat, seizures.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.
- However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Before using tetracaine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to certain anesthetics (e.g., ester-type such as procaine); or if you have any other allergies.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history.During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk.
- Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Missed
Dose - If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
- If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not double the dose to catch up.
Drug
Interactions - Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.
- Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use.
