What causes a charlie horse in the calf upon waking up in the morning? How to rid?

Many people already have said what may cause it. I will tell you how to deal with it, whenever it happens. Since, you are able to tell when a Charlie horse is about to take place, sit down on your bed immediately, after you feel it is coming. Extend you leg, not bending your knee. Bend your foot with all your might towards the front of your leg, (Not towards your calf) without touching it with your hands. With your closed fist, massage your calf with all your might. You will see immediate results.

You probably need to drink more water.

lay on your back, with your legs straight, lift or pull your feet up towards your head. or stand up. basically the back of your calf tenses up and you have to stretch it back out.

Several people already said Potassium, but I've also heard it's because you're dehyradated. Drink water before you go to sleep and keep a glass next to the bed to sip if you wake up.

General Muscle Cramps Information
Muscle cramps occur when a muscle contracts but does not extend back into its normal position after use. The pain of muscle cramping is the result of a muscle contracting suddenly without stretching out again. Muscle cramps often occur at night in the calves and feet. Muscle cramps are common and typically affect older adults, “weekend athletes”. Children can also experience what is known as "growing pains" or "growing cramps" in the legs, which can be very painful until the muscle relaxes and the cramping dissipates.

Possible Causes of Muscle Cramps
Muscle cramps are caused by an imbalance in the electrolytes and minerals in the body, including Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium. Cramps can also be the result of unusual physical exertion, as occurs with “weekend athletes” or those just beginning a new exercise regimen. Inactivity, anemia, tobacco use, fibromyalgia, hormone imbalance, allergies, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, dehydration and hypothyroidism can also lead to muscle cramps. The use of diuretic drugs for high blood pressure or heart disorders may lead to electrolyte imbalances causing muscle cramps.

Possible Symptoms of Muscle Cramps
Muscle cramps feel like sudden pain in the affected area that resemble a tightening or hardening in the muscle. The pain usually goes away in a matter of minutes or seconds. The pains often occur at night and can interrupt sleep. Leg cramps are very common in pregnant women and the elderly, but they can strike anyone. Cramps are more likely to occur in the heat and during strenuous exercise.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Muscle Cramps
Stretch the muscles thoroughly before and after exercise. Drink plenty of water before and after exercise. Avoid tight clothing and shoes as they can constrict blood flow, leading to cramping. When cramps occur in the calves, put the feet up and massage the affected area. Warm baths are very effective in treating sore muscles. If leg cramps occur in the calves (known as a “charlie horse”), stretch the muscle by extending the affected leg backward and leaning forward to stretch the calf muscle. If cramps occur often during the day, consult a doctor, as this is a symptom of impaired circulation or arteriosclerosis.

i used to get them all the time. i was told that it was because i didn't eat enough foods with Potassium like potatoes and bananas.

Sometimes, it can be as simple a resolution as eating a few bananas- it can be a lack of Potassium.

lack of potassium

Muscles contract and relax over and over again (Restless Legs) , but when a cramp occurs, the muscle locks in the contracted position (Charlie Horse) leg pain . When the muscle is irritated, it cramps to protect the area of difficulty. People who overuse their muscles during the day sometimes wake up at night with cramps. The best way to avoid a leg cramp is to warm up and stretch before and after exercise, and stay hydrated.

If you get a cramp, such as a hamstring cramp, lie on your back and gently bring the cramped leg, bent at 90 degrees or so, toward your head. Use one hand to stabilize the front of the thigh, while the other guides the back of the calf. The uncramped leg should be bent at 45 degrees for the least possible strain on your back.
