How long do I have to live? (stage 4 congestive heart failure)?
I have been diagnosed with stage 4 congestive heart failure. I am only 31 years old, female, and I have an enlarged heart, with a 25% left ventricle pump. The heart doc I go to is great, but won't tell me how long I have, although, I know, it's bad.
Additional Details
Thank you for all the frank answers. I am the kind of person that likes to see things clearly, as they are. Yes, I am tired all the time, and feel like I cannot breath. This has all happened so fast, and regardless of my diagnosis, I will not go down without a fight. I still believe in miracles, and I believe mine is on the way. God works through Doctors too.

Class IV (incapacitated) patients are unable to carry on any physical activity without discomfort. Symptoms of cardiac insufficiency or anginal syndrome may be present even at rest. Any physical activity results in discomfort.
Implantation of cardioverter defibrillator is indicated.

Get off the statins. They cause muscle damage by blocking CoQ10 and cholesterol production. Low CoQ10 causes DNA mutations in the Mitochondria of the (heart) muscles. Make sure to get the reduced version called ubiquinol.
CHF is considered permanent but you do not need to keep making it worse with statin drugs. Did you know that cholesterol is your body's repair mechanism? Why would you want to interfere with that?

Stage 4 congestive heart failure!?
After congestive heart failure is diagnosed, treatment should be started immediately.
路Perhaps the most important and yet most neglected aspect of treatment involves lifestyle modifications.
路Sodium causes an increase in fluid accumulation in the body's tissues.
路Congestive heart failure that is due to severe disease of the valves may be alleviated in appropriate patients by valve surgery.
路Restricting salt and fluid intake is often recommended because of the tendency of fluid to accumulate in the lungs and surrounding tissues.
路Limit their total daily fluid intake from all sources
路Aerobic exercise, once discouraged for congestive heart failure patients, has been shown to be beneficial in maintaining overall functional capacity, quality of life, and perhaps even improving survival.
路Medications have now been developed that both improve symptoms, and, importantly, prolong survival.
路Studies have demonstrated an impressive clinical benefit of beta-blockers in improving heart function and survival in congestive heart failure patients who are already taking ACE Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors.
路Diuretics are often an important component of the treatment of congestive heart failure to prevent or alleviate the symptoms of fluid retention.
路Medical researchers have found that Spironolactone (diuretic) can improve the survival rate of patients with congestive heart failure.
路It is important to prevent low potassium levels by taking supplements, when appropriate. Such electrolyte disturbances may make patients susceptible to serious heart rhythm disturbances.
路In some cases, despite the use of optimal therapies as described above, the patient's condition continues to deteriorate due to progressive heart failure. In selected patients, heart transplantation is a viable treatment option.
路Much attention has recently been directed towards the development of mechanical assist devices that are designed to assume part or all of the pumping function of the heart.
路A less invasive modality, which can be placed without surgery, is the biventricular pacemaker. This device has proved valuable in appropriate types of patients with heart failure and impaired ventricles by improving the synchrony of contraction.
Eat only whole foods, veggies, no meat, bread, or rice. Eat a combination carb/protein type and have a protein shake once or twice a week or salmon. You will feel completely recovered. Be strong, never lose hope and faith, you will make it!Yes,God works through doctors too.
Take care of yourself as always!

I am sure you like your Dr but he doesn't understand you have to prepare for the future. Have a frank talk with him and if he still won't tell you how long you have go see another Dr for a second opinion and see if anything else can be done. My FIL passed away from CHF and the Drs kept removing the fluid from around his heart. He would have lived longer if he had gone to the Dr before his appointment. He had an appointment for Feb 17 but was having trouble breathing from the fluid around his heart and we tried to get him to go to the Dr sooner, he wouldn't go. He died Feb. 9th, but had he went to the Dr he wouldn't have passed away. Get a second opinion if your Dr won't discuss this with you. My prayers are with you.

I'm sorry i cannot answer that BUT keep the docter you have because he knows you better then any other docter most likely ,

but go see another docter just so they can tell you how long you have.
and also , are you a candidate for a heart transplant?
i almost cried when i read this , i wish you the best and god bless you.

Well, there is research on injecting stem cells into the heart to "rejuvenate" the heart by producing healthy cardiac muscle. You should look into trials for this. A transplant may work, but I would prefer to try to get into one of these trials. Look at: clinicaltrials.gov

At 31, what happened? Why do you have this condition?

Are you a candidate for a transplant?? I hope so. God bless you.

No one can even attempt to predict for an individual and statistics mean little. Only your doctors with the most detailed information would have an inkling and even then this is not something physicians, quite rightly, like to guess at.
